Getting pension details for tax return after death

Options
I'm trying to do a tax return for my late father's estate, and I think I need to know how much state pension was paid to him between the start of the tax year and his death.

The only information I seem to have here is bank statements, which aren't a lot of help because he was also getting Attendance Allowance, which isn't taxable.

Does anyone know whether they will send me a statement of total pension paid and tax deducted if I ask them? I know his private pension was taxed, but unsure whether SP was or not!

Although state pension is taxable, no tax is deducted by DWP.

Any tax due is taken by adjustment of the tax code on another income stream. In your case, any tax due on the state pension would've been deducted from the private pension.

In other words, the amounts for state pension on the bank statement are gross amounts.

    Thanks.

So now I've just got to work out what the total paid for pension is, which I think I can do by finding the last notification and multiplying that by the number of weeks in payment, does that sound right?

The bank statements should have a reference.

My parents have NI No with AA or SP after(obvious which is which) on their bank statements.

Yes, there's a reference, but there seem to be a lot more SP than anything else, and it doesn't say AA which is why I'm confused ... although I am easily confused atm. Also don't have a full run of bank statements, would need to visit Mum to get them!

They should help once you know the AA rate and payment frequency (Easy to establish from a couple of entries and comparing dates)

Deduct the AA amounts from the gross payments shown on the statements.
No need for a full run- obtain daily value and multiply by number of days to death.

I think if you phone the Department of Work & Pensions and quote his NI number they should be able to provide this information. They'll be able to call it up on their computer. I recently had to make a similar enquiry myself for my own tax return.
