Sony Ericsson w810i flashing screen

Had a brand new w810i delivered this afternoon from Virgin.co.uk and all it does is flash on and off - white screen then nothing...white screen then nothing...and on and on.... The only way I can turn it off is to take the battery out.
I phoned up Virgin, woman on end of phone said it sounded like a software fault. She then put me on hold to arrange delivery for a new phone. She comes back on the phone and says her colleague says we're to charge the phone over night and if it doesn't work in the morning to ring back. Hmmmmmmm ok. Not impressed seeing as I've got a phone that doesn't work but I say ok cos they're obviously going to do nothing more now.
So I do as they say...plug the charger in and low and behold the flashing screen comes back on (sodding thing is flashing away happily right now).
I decide to ring Virgin back tonight and all I get from Mr.Helpful on the end of the phone is 'charge over night and the flashing is a sign of a low battery and it just needs to be charged overnight/12 hrs.' Funny thing is my sister got the exact same phone a few days ago and had no such problems with flashing screens! To me this screen seems similar to the screen of death you get on a computer when it crashes.
Mr.Helpful then decided to put the phone down before we'd even finished talking! I'm not impressed with Virgin's customer service tonight at all. So I'll be ringing back tomorrow morning regardless.
I'm just wondering has anyone else had this problem with the w810i?

this may be helpful
it probably is a software fault, but you could try taking the memory card (and/or sim card) out as it might be a corrupt memory card causing the problem. this may not work0 -
try your sisters battery in yours first to confirm battery is not faulty and is charging
if still the same then almost certain s/w problem0 -
Thanks for the replies - yep tried different battery, 2 different SIM cards, took MS out, tried different MS... and still all it'll do is flash on and off to its hearts content. Deffo think it's a software problem.
I'm just glad it's a new phone and that Virgin are sending me out a new phone tomorrrow :j Here's hoping this one doesn't have a liking for anything white and flashing!0
