My son is on a 12 month SIM only deal where he gets 300 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet for £15.

Her just bought a new phone (an android?) and asked me to change the tariff to a smartphone bolt on (I pay the bill, so o2 won't speak to him).

Called o2 today, no problem, they switched it over but it won't take effect until November 4th. This seems like an awful long time to wait and she told me that he may be charged if he uses the internet between now and then.

Does this sound right?

  • That must be when the billing cycle comes round. So yes, it does sound right. I don't understand why he need an extra bolt-on if he already gets unlimited internet, though.

The smartphone is different because they "use different servers" according to the o2 shop in Portsmouth.

I don't understand why he might be charged between now and then either.

I think you will find that that is nonsense .
I have an O2 Smartphone and use Virgin PAYG ftom a ten year old phone and a new O2 PAYG sim neither of which use any such nonsense .

I called o2 back. They said I should have been offered for the new bolt on to start tomorrow(!)

I said 'Thank you very much'.

Apparently, they'll send son a text when it's been set up.

jjEgan: Do you have unlimited internet access on those SIMs?

I cannot remember the exact cut-off date but if the existing contract was started before something like July this year then his unlimited internet was "unlimited" subject to a fair usage policy and I believe would have been fine to continue with using an android type phone. I'm not sure the "smartphone bolt-on" was necessary and this probably has an "unlimited" limit of 500Mb. Might be worth looking into.

No unlimited internet access by any network all subject to a limit .
Virgin PAYG .30p a day up to 25MB over charged at £2-0 per MB other tariffs have a daily cap of £1-69 for over use .
O2 Text and Web 500MB a month if you top up £10 a month .

This is what he has. £10 a month for 300 mins and unlimited texts and then a £5 bolt on that used to be 'unlimited' internet and now is a 500mb smartphgone bolt on.

I think I've been had, but I think 500Mb should be enough for him to run Facebook and Twitter.
