    Update

A family member as told me it is static on the motherboard
and to hold down the start button for 10 seconds to clear
it, and and it came back on, but does any one think it is
now going to be a problem that i could do something to
    stop happening.
The laptop is 2 years old and has only recently started and
    it is a real pain

Does the laptop work fine from the mains power? Have u been discharging the battery, say, every week? They do have a limited life expectancy depending on treatment /

I am using it connected to the mains thats when it is not
charging and switching on, but since I held the button
down for 10 seconds as i said in earlier post it is working.
It usually plays up when switching it on for the first time
in the day, today the light was on when not connected to
electric and lead was in, but would not work when plugged
in the light went off, so assume it is not charging.
Sorry to appear a biy dumb but when something different
    happens i am lost

As a test, during the night: with the laptop powered off, and the battery inserted, give the battery a full charge and see what happens. As I say, they do have a limited life-span.

Could it be possible that the battery has reached its life expectancy or is nearing it? Have you tried testing another battery on your laptop and see if the same thing will happen?

thanks for advice I will try the overnight test and than see
if the problem continues I will look to buy a new battery as
    it is used a lot.
    Thanks again

not a problem; let us know how u get on; and with the new battery, let it run down, say, once every week.

Here i am again as when i swithched on the laptop today
it does not work but when i have removed the battery
the laptop is working so will this harm the laptop to run it
without the battery in, just the power cable connected and
    it works fine

no, no harm at all; like i say though, with the new battery, let it run down once a week.

Thanks busenbust thats very helpful I am now using it with
no battery in that i did not think it was possible to do, as i
thought it needed it in or would harm laptop without it.
most of the time they are using it connected to mains as
they do not want it to lose games if the battery dies as
they are on for hours, but your advice is very helpful thankyou

    Happy Christmas To You too
