Downloads from BBC i player

Last time I looked you could only watch BBC i player as it streamed - there was no way to save the download. Has this changed now ?

Can I save BBC programs to my laptop and take them with me to watch later. I work abroad a lot and miss many programs and I cannot use i player from abroad.

And if it is possible, what is the download format and does this also apply to the ITV and Channel 4 equivalents.

I have BBC iplayer Desktop and when I download a programme I can view it up to a certain number of days before it expires.
I only have one show on it right now (Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow from Blackpool and I have until 15th November to watch it.

I'll have a go at adding something else and see how long I get to watch it.

on the BBC iplayer website, if you 'hover' over one of the tv programmes, more details show up but also the download icon. It looks like an arrow pointing down into a 'tray'. It's the only way I can describe it.

I definitely watched downloaded episodes of QI when I was stranded in California because of the volcano in April!

    Sorry for the individual posts!

    From the iplayer help section...

    Hope it helps!

I've just downloaded Mock The Week and it says it expires 16th November so yes, about a month.

  • Many thanks for the quick replies. i will look into some downloads when I get home. The use by date makes sense from a copyright point of view. 30 days seems reasonable.

As a matter of interest, is there one country you travel to or are you all over the place? My husband says, have you thought of a UK proxy server although there is a monthly charge and then you might be able to use something like TVCatchup but this is live streaming too.

My husband has also reminded that when we were on holiday in California we used 'Super Internet TV'.

  • It's mainly 1 country but the internet speed here is poor. OK for internet browsing but very slow for downloading. So I expect my downloading will be more practical when I am home.

I have heard of these proxy servers and maybe I will investigate. I appreciate the feedback. Many thanks.
