Sunny and bright here, thanks goodness.
None of mine have been to Uni, no need to with their jobs, DH did but he needed to. I really really think we need more apprenticeships, that's how DD2 got her job. Most kids wouldn't bother for £45 a week but she crammed as much in as she could, got her NVQ in 6mths rather than 12 and was on £17k a year later. That is shocking Tara - what do teenagers do that they need to spend over £45/week?
*is old and out of touch and probably doesn't spend that herself*
I started an apprenticeship and started on £7kpa so roughly £135pw not taking tax n NI into account. (about 7years ago!)
While I was doing it the company running my day release part merged with another who's minimum pay for their apprentices was £60pw we were all doing a 'proper' job for 4days a week.
The company I worked for went bankrupt only 4mths into my qualification so I had nothing to show for it really and I walked straight into a job offering £10kpa.
Unless you offer a proper wage for an apprenticeship no-one is going to do them, young people aren't generally motivated by what they could have in 5,10,15years time they want instant gratification.
eta - sorry thats all a bit jumbled! i can't think of the words to say what I need and make it pithy. Apprentices do a worthwhile job and I think they deserve to be paid for that appropriately, lots of companies saw a'ships as a kind of slave labour when I was doing it.0 -
It was another £35 per week for her travel Sami so I guess we factored that in. It was an option to do a different one for more but this one seemed the best prospects, and she was right. At the end of the day she lived at home so £45 in her pocket with no outgoings was fine, then she worked weekends to make a bit more. And even if she had dome the NVQ at the normal rate it would have only been one year on that money so no different to say 6th form or something. She saw the £45 as a bonus for on the job learning.Too many children, too little time!!!0

I really should move from the sofa but I've warmed this spot and I don't want to leave it:o Heating isn't keeping the house warm enough I'm not sure what's best, light the (gas) fire or turn up the (gas) heating or bring down one of the electric mini radiators from upstairs...0 -
I was on YTS when I left school. I worked four 9-5 days a week in the lab then did a 9-9 day at college doing ONC Science. The brewery had loads of trainee's in various positions throughout the business all doing 4 days work and 1 day at college for £27 a week and they paid our bus fares.
The only way you could get taken on permanently was if someone left and you applied for their job. At the end of two years, there were no vacancies in the lab, so I got the boot and they got another YTS in.
I didn't think that was right as they were just taking advantage of slave labour.
Josh is keen to do a degree in forensics, but I'm trying to persuade him it would be better to do a general chemistry or biochemistry or similar degree. I don't suppose there are many jobs in forensics, but if he had a general science degree he could go into other areas of science and learn anything else he needs to know on the job.
I'll support him through it as long as it's what he really wants to do and he puts the effort in. I know my parents were upset as they really struggled to put my brother through uni and he just scraped out with a 3rd.
Had loads more snow here this morning, and I don't know how I'll get the car out of the street. Nursery is closed so I've got Charlotte at home as well as the boys. Work is piling up at an alarming rate and I've got no idea when it will get done.
Got caught in a complete white out blizzard this morning. Took the dogs out with Charlotte and it was clear, then the blizzard just sprang up from nowhere, typically when we were at the furthest point away from home! Could only see a few feet in front of us and it was a bit scary. The dogs didn't seem to mind though and they were still running about like lunatics. Charlotte kept saying "Mam, the snow is filling my eyes up" :rotfl:Here I go again on my own....0 -
