Thanks very much for this, it seems my issue is quite serious, there is a way of resolving it but it just seems way too complicated, for instance, the first step is to Create a parallel installation of Windows NT. that sounds way out of my universe so I will take it to a comoputer shop tomorrow instead.

Many thanks to you all for your advice and time. xxx

It probably is way out of your universe especially as you're not running Windows NT. ;):D

Have you installed any software recently? If so what programs have you installed.

That's also very interesting and I would give it a go but guess what? I cannot find my Windows disc - also it mentioned a registration Key which I don't know what it is tbh. Think I better stick to Plan A and take it to a pro. Excellent site btw, the admin fella certainly know's his stuff eh?

Wow.. the local PC shop want 75gbp (no pound sign on this laptop) to restore windows  I think that's a bit too much for what he said would be an hours work  if I could find the windows disc I would attempt this myself!

Some PCs have the restore disk in a hidden partition. What's the model?
You're right, £75 for something anyone can do is a bit much, especially a restore to factory settings.
You realise that all your data will be lost if you go down the restore route?

    Diamonds, you have two options:

    a) Find a decent pc repair guy and get a better price
    b) Acquire an XP disc from a pal

£75 is well out of order, he's extracting the urine.

    It's a Shuttle XPC SN95G5.

The Computer guy said to give him a list of what I wanted to keep so I said all my photo's & told him where they were) and some video (just 4 docs), he said he could retrieve them no problems but like I say, 75quid to do it

he will be able to retrieve them if the hard drive is not damaged, so will you if the hard drive is not damaged.

get a copy of windows xp, place it in your cd drive and reboot. with a genuine windows xp disk it will boot up your pc from it.

then you can go back to last known working configuration or roll back a couple weeks to a time when everything was tickety boo.
