How can this be worked out mathematically as to how many hours the person was on the phone for?

If you divide seconds by 3600 you get hours, as there are 3600 seconds in an hour.0

8.5 minutes talk time = 512 seconds
0.1422 hours doesn't mean 14 mins0 -

Details:
512 seconds = 8.5333 Minutes (take 512 and divide that by 60, since there are 60 seconds in 1 minute)
512 seconds = 0.1422 hours (take 512 and divide that by 3600 since there are 3600 seconds in 1 hour: 60x60=3600)0 -
