Don't think it's a cookies at the PC side...

I'm on Ubuntu (10.10) and it's only started with me in the past day or so!

No biggie just slightly annoying. ^_^

It seems to just be the first time you visit the main forum page after you've re-opened IE, Firefox, etc.

Just ignore the fact it shows you as being logged out and go into one of the sub-forums. You should find that you'll then appear logged in and if you go back to the main forum page it will also show you as being logged in.

Obviously there is a site issue somewhere, but there's no need to log in. :)
Thanks, this works! It was really annoying having to log in each time I opened the forums.
  • its a good workaround but does not answer why it happens all the time. It only happens on this site as far as I can see. Done the ccleaner bit as well.

Same with me on Opera. I have found that if I click on "Forum Search", it then remembers me !
  • See post 9, this works without clicking on anything else.

but if you have ccleaner set to delete cookies then it'll cause the original problem.

I had this problem too, deleting and resetting cookies was no help, and I was curious about the fact that if I ignored the logon box and navigated through the fora I would suddenly become logged on again. So I went digging.

In my case, the solution was in the bookmark I was using to get to MSE. I have/had a bookmark pointing directly at the User CP, used it happily for years. This was http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/usercp.html and until last week functioned properly, but no more. Changing it to http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/usercp.php makes the login dialog work again, or more precisely, not appear when I am logged on. I guess the problem has been caused by some minor change in the way cookies are being handled on the server.
A quick check would suggest that all pages on MSE have a .php extension and .html links are being redirected, so if your Bookmark (or Favourite) is pointing to a .html, changing it to .php will have solve the problem.

Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.
