Quote for Replacement Facias, Soffits & Guttering

Options
Guys,
Just recently got a guy to come round ( friend's recommendation) to give me a price for replacing all my Facias, soffits and guttering on my 3 Bed semi, Bay windows at front AND back.
Gave me a price of £2050. Seems on the high side to me after a few chats, of course will get a few more.
He has since sent the contract in the post to sign, asking for deposit of £410, but the surveyor has YET to come round. To my mind this doesn't seem right ( is it the usuall way of doing things??), and secondly, no mention yet of guarentee or details of the spec, which I would perhaps expect from the surveyor maybe? but not after paying a deposit.
I'm gona obviosly get some more quotes, not sign anything and will negotiate more of a price anyway.
What I'm asking for is a) how does the price sound to you guys, and b) is my instinct regarding the paying of deposit before a surveyors visit( regarless off cost issue) seem to be the wrong way round.
Any replies greatly appreciated on the points I've raised and anymore that people think they'd like to share.
Thanks !!

just had same done for my detached chalet villa which i reckon must be bigger than yours; best of 3 quotes was £4500 including dry verge
and i've been careful making sure it will be non-recycled upvc and full thickness boards (not cladding)...
salesmen ranged from knowlegable but pushy to ignorant and thick.
really get a few in and learn your subject first. the last one mentioned some niggles like pros ad cons of replacing downpipes and how he intended to cope with a particularly fiddly bit which gained my respect but his price was higher. still i will ask those questions of anyone i am considering or go back and negotiate more with him.

also comes with 2 types of insurance. one for workmanship and another for if the company goes bust.

no deposit at all required before installation from 2 out of 3 and 3rd wants 10% after all agreed and signed. I wouldn't pay anything first.

Hahaha, if I was satisfied with a quote in the first place I don't think I would come on here and post a thread in the "Is this quote fair?" section

Why do you necessarily expect a surveyor? The big companies send a surveyor round 'cos the salesmen don't really know what they are doing (nor do they need to by the biz model). If he's a one man band or a small local company he won't need a surveyor.

  • In my experience I find the small companies now call the person that visits a surveyor.

This may be the sole trader himself, one of the partners etc - I presume it sounds more professional and in keeping with the rest of the industry.

It certainly does not mean 'chartered surveyor' or anything quite as formal as that.

I may be wrong, but this is what my recent interpretations have been.

Is the roof a hip end ( Triangle) or just up and over, this makes a difference at it can double the parts list. Try Anglian or Everest and expect a quote of £3-5k or more. £55 per linier mtr is abot average, depends if they use thicker soffits etc and remove existing, or just cover over existing. The only warranty you need is if it all falls off. PVCu starts to harden and dull straight away due to sunlight. OH if your quoted for white, this is 100% less costs than wood or black effcet.

PS: £410 will buythe plastic (cheap stuff in white).
  • As said above £55 a linear metre for white for full replacemnt

OTE]there are 2 ways of doing this work .the cheaper way ie. cladding over the top. we normally charge around£800. total strip off and renew works out at around £1600.

Covering over existing fascias is a bodge (IMHO of course) and not only results in the wood rotting away underneath where you can't see it happening but if not replacing the guttering at the same time the guttering doesn't fit properly when you put it back up!

    Cheers
