02 Abroad

Hi guys,

I'm going abroad in a couple of weeks & need advise on Mobile phone use.
I currently have a Palm Pre () on the 02 network (:mad:)
Being a smart phone it constantly pulls my email's & web stuffs down while its on.
Although switching it off/in to flight mode before I leave the uk, then reactivating the only wifi once im there is a option, its not ideal as I would need to make a couple of calls & of course as soon as I enable the phone the emails etc will pour in & as I'm in a foreign country I expect my bill will go up just as fast.

Disabling all the data is not really viable on it so I've come up with a plan that I'd like your opinion on.
To saving having to get the phone unlocked, I thought about applying for a Free 02 sim.
It'll come with some credit on it, put it in the phone, set it up & take that, using the 'free' money to call home for the usual, checking in etc.

Would that work? or is 02 wise to such actions?

Thanks

I didn't know there were any free O2 sim that came with credit these days ??

But, yes that might work, depends on where you're going? Not all partner networks allow payg access (most do but not all), so you'd need to find out from O2 CS which network to select when you get there. And some overseas network charge up to £10 a meg for data, so you could run out of credit very quickly. . .

Many apps have settings which say , only update on home network, on my trips abroad, I have no reason to doubt they work as suggested.
But yes a PAYG sim would work, however the credit used maybe more than your contract debit, if the device was going to use data.

Well I assumed they would still do them, however if they dont I do still have a old sim kit from back in the day, thats unused, I could use that & just add say £10 credit to it?

I've had alook through the phone & the only way to stop the data seems to be to delete all the accounts - sounds like too much hasstle to me, as I'd need to remember all the passwords etc

Do you have an old spare phone that you could take abroad, and leave the smart phone at home?

Also if you are going to use an old free sim card, do check it as the numbers get blocked after a while.

  • Why can't you turn data roaming off? There should be an option under Phone > Preferences > Network and look for an option called "Data Roaming" this will disable all data while roaming. Where are you going? If it's outside the EU turn off voice mail (dial 1760 and 1750 to turn it on again) as you will get charged when somebody leaves you a voice mail. If you want to go the PAYG route you can top up as little as £5 with a free sim from http://freesim.o2.co.uk/
