Post on the moneysaving DIY - is this quote reasonable board. https://www.protectacoat.co.uk
I had a friend who worked for them. They sell a coating which is supposed to protect your house and keep the damp out of the walls etc. From what I remember they tended to target the more vulnerable home owners (ex council, poorer neighbourhoods) by cold calling door to door to make appointments for their salesmen
(I am no longer in touch with the friend and she no longer works for them)0 -
I had a long conversation with a very professional salesman from protectacoat. The product sounds excellent - a two stage microporous system that is trowelled on by a plasterer. The finished product has a kind of stippled finish like rollered artex. They supply a 20 year unconditional guarantee and will do all repairs including patching where windows are replaced, etc.
Unfortunately the cost is prohibitive - I got a quote of more than £7k for my back wall which is currently pebbledashed. That is quite a bit for around 16 square metres of cover. The price would drop to around £5.3k if the property was used as a show home.
I was impressed with the product, salesman and company but the price is far too much - can't see how a standard price of around £440 per square metre can possibly be justified !!PLEASE DO NOT STEAL

Why would you need a protective coating on your house? Isn't that what BRICKS are for? Sounds like absolute BS to me.
Repoint or re-render if and when it needs it. Paint it with paint if and when it needs it.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Only reasons I can see for justifying a protective coating is to refurbish damaged brickwork or clear up penetrating damp in a wall without a functioning cavity.
Apparently a house brick can hold a pint and a half of water - sounds unbelievable, doesn't it ?PLEASE DO NOT STEAL

Who told you that? The man from Protectacoat?
Penetrating damp has to come from somewhere and it would be far better to deal with that problem rather than slap on some rubber paint, or whatever it is. I suspect you could even do more harm than good.
By the sound of the cost, damaged brickwork would be better rendered.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

'Who told you that? The man from Protectacoat?'
How did you guess :-)
There is a possibility it is true of course - perhaps I will test it out when I have finished watching this paint dry :-)
Pentrating damp occurs for all sorts of reasons, particularly in solid walled property. The protectacoat solution is apparently micro porous which means that the wall can breath without allowing water in, rather like gortex, etc. Totally waterproof solutions are a problem because they hold damp in.PLEASE DO NOT STEAL
