    Not Buying it 2015!
  • I'm hoping it's not nationwide. Suspect it is, though :(
Im in Scotland and couldnt believe the price increase today..i ended up buying the Hovis bread flour cos at 99p for 1.5kg at least it was cheaper than Tescos own make.
to be honest I always assumed Tesco,Asda and Morrisons own brand flour was the same stuff just in different coloured packaging?

Thanks OP, hadnt noticed the Tesco rise, but went to LIDL today and stocked up at 60p for 1.5kg. To be fair, wheat commodity prices have shot up but Tesco's price increase is ludicrous. No doubt at some stage they'll reduce it briefly to 99p as a special offer to make us duly grateful!
  • I, too, had a shock when I went into Tesco this week, and saw the price of £1.29! Thankfully, the other supermarkets have not put up their prices yet. I noticed that the Waitrose Extra Strong Canadian Bread Flour has increased in price by 20p. Also, many of the Wrights bread-mixes have risen in price by 30%, in many stores.

I, personally, believe that the rises are a rip-off. Although the wheat harvest in Russia failed, and they are not exporting, from what I understand, there are record levels of grain in grain stores, and there are record harvests in Australia, Canada, and America. There is no shortage, so prices should not rise.

I did read an interesting article on the net a few weeks ago, suggesting that rises in the cost of food over the last 2 or 3 years is less due to shortages, and more due to speculators gambling on the prices of the various commodities. I think this may be the case with the current increases in the price of wheat.

Just bumped up a piece of work I did on bread flour prices.
The wright bread and cake mixes look amazing, I'm so tempted by mixed grain and the toffee cake mix!
Living cheap in central London :rotfl:

I've never tried the mixed grain and toffee cake mixes. I have tried the Parmesan and Sun-Dried Tomato mix. I certainly enjoyed that one. I'll have to keep an eye out for the toffee cake mix.:)

The Waitrose one is 64p at the moment :D

The Waitrose Essentials (green and white bag - I don't know if they do other ones) is £1 in our local shop (which isn't incidentally a Waitrose, but they do have contracts to sell Waitrose and Iceland stuff)

The Tesco flour (pink bag) in our local Tesco is £1.34. That's a rise of just over 150% in a couple of weeks!

Right time to report back and I'm a happy bunny, I baked a lovely loaf of bread today with the Waitrose flour. I think Tesco and Waitrose get theirs from the same suppliers but Asda I'm sure don't, the difference in the size and height of loaf is too much. Thanks again everyone for your input
  • I've made the Wright's toffee cake mix and it was delicious! Really tasty and got better a couple of days after baking.

Am currently waiting for their chocolate cake to cool and will see what that tastes like
