i think the sim card has to be in the uk during the port process.

I think the number is 08080945945 to change from Vodafone contract to pay as you go.

Another option is T-Mobile (UK) pre-pay.

55p per minute in the US.

12p per Minute for UK calls and 4p to call the US with it from the UK, with the international call bundles

    ;)

  • To be honest I never use my UK phone over here as I have a US mobile anyway :) I just want to get the monthly payment as cheaply as possible then either change the tarriff or pay as I go when I get back to the UK.

It's a real waste of cash the £20 a month... Especially when I have to wire money back to the UK every few months to cover it (amongst other things!)

I think the easiest thing to do now is ask Vodafone to change it to pay-as-you-talk. No messing about with PAC numbers now; leave that for when you actually decide which network to be on in future.

You need to use it every six months though; if you do decide to transfer, Virgin is more lenient in not cutting SIMs off a bit later than this.

But do you really need to keep the same number, now it's hardly in use? It's easy enough to start again with a new one when the time comes.

You can't transfer numbers on to global roaming SIMs. In fact you can't transfer across to any other country.
  • ask vodafone for a pac code, and then get a pay as go sim

  • Hi,

I work for Vodafone UK and hope I can help advise on the policies involved here.

An option I'd recommend when going overseas for an extended period would be to request for your monthly SIM to be ported over to Pay As You Talk, if you're in contract commitment then you would be required to pay the remaining monthly line rental up until the end of the deal. However if you've only got a few months of your contract left and you're going to be out of the country for a long period it's best to pay this off, get your number switched to pay as you talk (avoiding future line rental) then should you ever want to return to the UK and switch back to a contract you can port your number back again.

For details on how to switch your number over to pay as you talk:

Vodafone do require written notice and there's a 30 day period for the process to take effect. I'd recommend putting together a letter including the following details and either posting or faxing it over to Vodafone. As you're going to be overseas I'd also recommend including an email address in your letter and asking for future contact and confirmation to be made that way (it would just make future communication a little easier rather than waiting for return letters to come through)

1- Your billing address in full.
    2- Your date of birth.
    3- Your landline contact number.
    4- Your payment method.
5- Your account and mobile number.
    6- Your signature.

You can send your request either by fax to 08701616500 or by post to the following address:

    Vodafone Ltd
    PO Box 549
    Banbury,
    OX17 3ZJ.

Hope this helps give you another option should you decide to consider staying on with Vodafone Pay As You Talk. It's possible to keep the same SIM, all you'd need to do is make a quick chargable call every 180 days to keep the number active and stop it from being disconnected and recycled.

As far as I'm aware, having spoken with Vodafone's porting team today, they tell me it's not possible to port a number over to a global SIM outside of the UK.

Any other questions please let me know.
