What about during the long school holidays? What did you do then? I walked alone from age 6 but the past is another country. I am quite surprised that anybody would leave 11 year olds alone nowadays. There are so many new things to worry about.
I remember when I was under 10 my older sister was about and looking after us, she'd have been about 18. But I have hazy memories.

When I was 11 my mum didn't work in the school holidays, I don't think. I really can't remember.

I disagree, teenage children are expensive. They may not need childcare but they need clothes and they grow, constantly. They also socialise, constantly.
I don't know what you mean by socialising. I used to sit down the recreation ground, or at the village pump. That's free.

And clothes were second hand until you got old enough for a part-time job and could buy your own few bits.

Means testing should include both assets and income

I blame the parents then ... obviously got too much cash to flash about.
  • No one should receive Child Benefit
No-one should receive it, deserved or not, it's a lifestyle choice. If you can't feed, don't breed.

And presumably you say to the children: 'If your mum and dad's ends don't meet, don't eat.'

    Or words to that effect.

why should you be paid to have children? it`s a personal choice, if you can`t afford don`t have.

    Couldn't agree more.

We should maybe go further, and advocate that each couple have a "right to reproduction" - up to a maximum of two - which is fair.

From third child onwards, parents should become totally liable for cost of health cover, education costs, or at least significant contribution to each). Triplets etc. excluded.

There would be no logic whatsoever for a government payment to me if I chose to buy a second car, and a third. There is no logic whatsoever for the government to pay me money if I want to look after 15 dogs, three horses and a goat. There is no logic whatsoever for the government to pay me each time I choose to have a child.

I will have all, some, or none of these at my own choice, and pay accordingly.

Exactly, people need to take responsibility for themselves. I find it strange that people think the government needs to have any involvement in this.

Benefits should only be for the truly needy rather than us paying for someone's choice.
