Benefit entitlement

My wife is pregnant and her JSA is going to stop at the end of Dec as she has not paid enough contributions??, funny that as she has worked constantly for 12 years.

Will she be entitled to anything before maternity allowance kicks in at 11 weeks to go, she's looking at 2 months with no money.

I am her husband and earn £21,000 pa

It sounds like she is on contribution based JSA, which does only continue for six months.

Not quite sure why she is on JSA as she is pregnant. Was she made redundant, and the pregnancy is just coincidental as regards timing?
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

  • I'm asking the question because I don't know, if I knew the answer I wouldn't be asking the question, do you know why she wouldn't be entitled to MA?.

She needs to of been working in a certain period up to the birth to be entitled to MA. As she will of been on JSA for 6 months its unlikely she will qualify for maternity allowance. There is no other benefits she will be entitled to on the run up to the birth after JSA. You will get child benefit of £20 per week after the birth and child tax credits also.

Could claim conts based ESA from the date her JSA ended...tho you will need med certs from doctor depression back pain etc...

A pregnant female can claim ESA for a certain amount of weeks before and after her pregnancy. However, being pregnant isn't generally a reason to claim ESA - unless there's a risk to the female or the baby.
She needs to of been working in a certain period up to the birth to be entitled to MA.

It's 26 weeks out of 66 and needs to have been earning £30 per week during the test period.

The fact that she is on JSA might be a clue ;)
