Can I claim benefits if also claiming on unemployment insurance

I have taken out unemployment insurance in preparation possible redundancy, would I get JSA/Council Tax benefit/any other benefits on top of this or not.
It seems unfair if I don't as I've worked for 25 years and been prudent in insuring myself against unemployment.

Hiya,
I'm currently claiming on my Mortgage insurance and I have had to prove that I am claiming JSA for my claim to go through.
From the insurance point of view its "proof" that you are unemployed. Mine wanted to see my P45 as well, proof again.
Best of luck.0 -
If you are eligible for Conts based JSA, you can receive it whilst also receiving your insurance payments.
If you are only eligible for Income based JSA, your insurance will count as income. However you will need to sign on even if you do not receive payment. Your insurance will also count as income for CTB and LHA/ help with mortgage costs.Gone ... or have I?0 -
You need to show that you have no control over the payments so that it does not count as income. IE if it is paid direct from the insurance company to a credit card company or bank or direct to your mortgage company and you don;t get your hands on it then its oK. If it comes in to your bank account and you can do what you like with it then it is income and you will be subject to the income rules regarding entitlement to benefit0

You are thinking of PPI, this is different from unemployment insurance. With PPI the money covers the payment for which it was taken out, unemployment insurance covers your normal income (or part of it), and as such comes to you. You cannot specify an alternative allocation of payment.paddedjohn wrote: »i had one of these policies about 12yrs ago, i was made redundant but had substantial savings so didnt bother to claim the dole, because of this the insurance wouldnt pay out.

You could have signed on for credits only, in which case your insurance would have still paid out.Gone ... or have I?0
