If you open an account in scotland and transfer your current RBS account to scotland... does this keep the account history?

I'm thinking of doing this, but need my account history kept as i'll shortly be applying for a mortgage

    thanks, DJ

Your pre-assessment with the bank will be unaffected by doing what you propose.

I have asked RBS to transfer my account to a Scottish branch, and I asked them a similar question as you ask here.

(Note, if you open a new account yourself, and transfer yourself, then I'm not sure if this would be true in that case ?)

RBS told me that my account history would be retained with the transfer. They also told me that they are looking at a method of making the account statement history available via the online services. Remember, the new account in the Scottish branch will be under a different Sort Code / Account Number so when you access your new account via RBS online services, there will need to be a way of looking at the old account too.
I wait to see how they are going to achieve this

    P.S.
I also wrote to my current English branch to inform them that my account is to be transferred and that under no circumstances should they allow my personal information (or account history) to be given to Santander - I have been assured that they will not give out my info to Santander :)

  • When I opened an account with RBS there were two ref numbers. One was personal, one was for the application. I presume that all our accounts are under one ref number, so the history would continue through this number. Whilst we have fresh account numbers. I hope this makes sense.

As someone in a similar situation to the OP (good standing with RBS but adverse credit history with Santander) I discovered that when applying to RBS for an account in Scotland, a brand new credit check is done. In my case, this was enough for RBS to reject the application for the account - regardless of any existing history with the RBS.

My RBS account holding branch were unable to transfer my account to Scotland.

In the end, I was able to open a key account in Scotland (no overdraft, no cheque book) but this took about 4 weeks and a complaint. I have also filled in the transfer form mentioned by stclair. So if it all goes well, my existing account (with overdraft etc.) will get moved to Scotland before the move to Santander. If not, I can use the emergency key account.

Each customer has a customer identification number under which virtually all products are held.

Main reason for asking this, was that I am going to be applying for a mortage in the next 6 months. If I transfer branch now, will I still be able to say I've been with my bank 15 years rather than 1 month (or so) after its been transferred ?

Yes, in my opinion you have been a customer of the bank for 15 years - it's just your branch that has changed. It's the same as if you upgraded from a key account to royalties, it's just a change of account type - you've still banked with RBS for the same amount of time.

The reporting will remain the same on there credit file too. The name will just change to santander from RBS.
