the usual poster that updates us about jobs being lost and people being made redundant must have missed this one... or maybe his "jobs" search function is set to find job losses only...
Jaguar Land Rover is to invest billions of pounds in its business, creating thousands of new jobs and safeguarding its UK factories, it has announced.
The new jobs will include 1,500 at the Halewood plant on Merseyside next year, while the other two manufacturing sites at Castle Bromwich and Solihull in the West Midlands will be retained, ending fears for their future.
and it looks like people do get above inflation pay rises after all... i guess the unlucky one must be the guys that on this forum...
The Unite union said a deal had been struck that included a two-year pay deal worth 5% this year and an above-inflation rise the year after.

  • Are these proper full-time permanent jobs or like the hundreds they laid off at a moments notice without redundancy as they had been working on rolling temporary contracts for years on end?

It would be nice to know they are not just "temporary".

I double checked and confirmed that Unite (See http://www.unitetheunion.org/news__events/latest_news/unite_secure_future_for_jlr_s.aspx)
was equally happy with the news. Of course the 4,000 new jobs aren't yet available - it's just an estimate of what employment should be created over the next ten years. But still, we have a British based manufacturer that's planning to invest and expand production, which should be good news to all of us.

Except of course to those of us who take it as an article of faith that the 'end-is-nigh-now-the-useless-tories-are-in-power'.

I have had a couple of agencies call me this week asking if I am interested in working there, on an interim basis. Some of the jobs, not all, are starting very soon.

I am not saying they are all interim but some certainly are.

That is not to say it is bad news. It is very very good news indeed and just shows how Tata were chancing their arm when they wanted a government bung a couple of years back.
"There's no such thing as Macra. Macra do not exist."
"I could play all day in my Green Cathedral".
"The Centuries that divide me shall be undone."
"A dream? Really, Doctor. You'll be consulting the entrails of a sheep next. "

JLR have been recruiting since about March.

They had to dump all the "temporary" workers before they moved onto getting rid of the permanent staff.

They effectively cut the manufacturing staff by a third.

Obviously due to the effects of the credit crunch.

Since exports looked more attractive & finance became more available they have been selling more cars. Also with the edition of new models that have also helped with sales.

This is being reported locally as a saving of a plant from closure not as an expansion as JLR have confirmed the sites are staying open for the next few years.

The Union is keen to sell this as a victory but they gave in highly on any future employees who JLR can pay substantially less money to.

What a formal press release from Unite? They're so pleased that they even issued two press releases, with top man Derek Simpson saying "The rest of UK manufacturing should take note. Reward your workforce's loyalty, build on the excellence and skills of UK workers, and your business will thrive." And Derek Simpson ain't exactly no right-wing stooge, being that he's ex-CPGB, won't 'talk to Tories', and the man who got Ed M his big job.
It says that in the original Sky News report. I can read. That's the deal that Unite did. Any complaints address them to Derek Simpson c/o Unite, 35 King Street, London, WC2E 8JG.
So now you're complaining about me posting in the same thread as you?
Well I'm three-nil up so far. That'll do me for today. (Or is it four-nil? Nevermind.)

You are one of them dense people on MSE I keep hearing about aren't you?

Just because you have read Unites' statement & listened to Sky News (poor choice by the way) it doesn't mean you understand anything.

& it is so apparent you don't. :rotfl::rotfl:

Keep trying. Or just !!!! Off.

I have had stalkers before you know. I seem to attract them. They all had one thing in common. Thick as sh*t.
