One of the most useful features of fire fox which I use is using the "3rd mouse button". Click the scroll wheel (if you have one) on an internet link and it will open that page in a new tab and keep your current tab open. Useful for opening multiple links when browsing lists of documents.

Also if you look at your bookmarks and select one with the middle button it will open that bookmark in a new tab.

Mozilla has officially backpedaled from a pledge made at Black Hat by the company's director of ecosystem development, Mike Schaver, to fix any critical security bugs in the browser within 'Ten ****ing Days.' On Friday, Mozilla security chief Window Snyder wrote in a blog posting that the 10-day pledge is not Mozilla's policy, saying 'We do not think security is a game, nor do we issue challenges or ultimatums.' And today, the open source browser maker issued a statement retracting the pledge

So you think they're fixed quicker?

    Here's a bugtraq for today:
OpenSSL PKCS Padding RSA Signature Forgery Vulnerability
    Published: Sep 05 2006 12:00AM Updated: Aug 06 2007 05:15PM
    Solution:
Mozilla has released a new advisory MFSA 2006-66 stating that this issue was not properly addressed in previous fixes. A variant of this issue is still exploitable after applying the fixes released as part of Mozilla advisory MFSA 2006-60.

  • Just to add:

All versions of OpenSSL prior to and including 0.9.7j and 0.9.8b are affected by this vulnerability. Updates are available.

This is nothing to do with firefox or a specific application but OpenSSL instead :)

Firefox is open source thus also making it more secure. :) A good reason.

Hmmm I think I disagree with this too. Open Source doesn't necessarily mean more secure. I'm sure there are plenty of badly written and managed open source apps out there full of bugs.

In the case of Firefox, it won't be hugely different from something like Opera in terms of development. It has got to the point where fixes need to go through numerous code reviews, testing etc... and even before then fully reviewed, prioritised etc...

Opera is a great browser. Probably the best "out of the box" browser available. If Firefox is running slow on your pc, I'd recommend using Opera. It's nice and light on resources but provides all the general functionality you could need.

Firefox did have memory leaks previously but I believe they're all fixed around v1.5. At current it can use up a large amount of memory, but it's only using what is available. It's not a beast, but neither is it exactly light.

I personally use Firefox because of the extensions. I couldn't be without Google Browser Sync, Firebug, GreaseMonkey, superior profile management to Opera etc...

  • At least we all agree Firefox is definitely more secure than IE ^-^

Actually no. IE7 on Vista is the same and some sites reckon it's better. There was a few months recently where fewer vulnerabilities were found in IE7 than FF.

However I still use Firefox because of the customisation. I'm just not daft enough to believe that FOSS means more secure.

Have done a clear out using ccleaner do you think that's enough? or should I trawl through add/remove programs?
Thanks for taking the time to reply - really appreciate it:D TTFN
I'd go through the add/remove programs, also if you're able, see what's starting and running, that you don't need , by using MSConfig.

When installing both Firefox and Thunderbird for the first time you are given the option to set as default.
Firefox offers to import favourites from IE, (to be called Bookmarks).
Thunderbird offers to import Address Book into its (TBird) Address Book where it stays as a sub-folder called
    Outlook Express.
    Move along, nothing to see.
