Cancelling Sky TV early?

Hi,
To keep a long story short:
My wife and I seperated a few months ago, we took out Sky a few months before that. (The two statements aren't related!) My wife is staying in the home we were in and the Sky account is in my name. She would like to start a new Sky account in her name so she can get Sky TV, phone and broadband together.
I have contacted Sky and they will not allow me to transfer the account under her name, nor to cancel early, even with a fee/paying the remaining months early like one would with a mobile phone contract.
Changing the address on my account isn't a viable option either as my current abode (staying at my mum's) already has Sky, taken out at roughly the same time in her name, and I'm not sure how long it will be before I move out, and would like to resolve the issue before then.
When I spoke to the Sky advisor, I was told that seperation was not grounds that would allow me to cancel my contract, but I would be able to cancel the contract if I was going travelling abroad for an extended period.
My question is: If I phoned Sky and told them I was going abroad, and that I wanted to cancel, rather than the truth, would this land me in any legal hot water, when I wasn't actually planning on going abroad? Would I be required to provide proof?
Thanks,
Bartimaeus.

I know of someone who cancelled sky 6 months early after explaining they were struggling with money.
So it could be worth trying today.0 -
Tell them you have split up with the Mrs and are going abroad for a while (you haven't decided how long yet) to get your head together and that the Mrs has agreed to transfer the account into her name. You can also change your mind about going abroad...you have that right!Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those affected (Benjamin Franklin) JFT96...YNWA0

Lying to a Sky advisor is in no way illegal.0 -
The Sky advisor is clueless. 'Going abroad' does not get you out of a valid and binding contract (though of course if you do a bunk they're hardly going to pursue you overseas). Neither does separation or divorce. Death will qualify though...
Of course you can cancel your contract-any time you like. However you will then be charged an early termination fee equal to the balance due to the end of the minimum term, so it won't save you anything except the VAT.
I suggest you call them back and hope that this time you get someone who has a clue.
What you can of course do is change the DD over to her bank account for the rest of the contract-however you will remain liable for the account if she defaults on payment. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Hi,
Just a thought.
1. Cancel your mother's contract.
Then transfer your account to your mother's address.
or 2.
Ask them to first change your contract to joint names. You and Your wife.
Then your wife can do the direct debit to Sky.
Later you can ask them to remove your name from the joint contract.
or 3
Is it possible to change the direct debit from yourself to Sky
to
From your wife to Sky.
( Not sure of your personal situation ,so last option may not be practical ).

Hi,
If you use the first option.
That is your mother cancel's her contract. And you transfer your contract to your mother's address,
then your wife can keep your sky box and get the free sky channels.
Then your wife is free to find the best broadband and phone contract with another provider if need be.

yoy, his mothers contract is within 12 months, so will run into the same stumbling block.
OP, don't overcomplicate this, tell sky you no longer live at the address as you are moving home. You wish to freeze the account and will contact them when you have found a suitable new home to reactivate it. In the meantime you are staying with relatives who have a full subscription.0
