Oh and just a thought i'm certain your keys will be fine
When you inserth the key into the ignition the immobiliser reads the code on the key and allows you to start it so if your keys were fubared the car wouldn't start.
It a central locking issue and i'm sure thats a fuse..
Oh and the auto lock door thingy your talking about is R.A.ID (Reanault Anti Intruder Device)
thanks that sounds promising! when it first happened i was panicking and had a quick look on some car forums - most were saying that if the keys wont start the ignition then they will need replacing, but luckily mine still do.

thanks i will look at that but as both went at the same time i was thinking it might not be the batteries. may be though so will keep it in mind.
