Right I will attempt to make this as clear as I can.... If you have a car on a public road/area you MUST legally have 3 things (MOT, Insurance (tempory or permanant, but must be valid for the whole period the car is on a public road) and road TAX......

If the car is NOT parked on a public road/area you can have whatever you want (providing you have the land owners permission and dont break any relevant laws ie run someone over)....

Therefore you can insure your car till you get TAX the cancel the insurance and have it on a public road with no insurance but this is illegal, you can insure your car and not get TAX again illegal etc etc....

So to repeat for a final time YOU MUST HAVE VALID INSURANCE, TAX AND MOT wheather you are driving the car or just parking it on a public road/area....

Sorry forgot to mention you must also have a valid driving licence be that a provisional or a full driving licence.... As you say you are new to the UK and you have had your licence since you were 18, is your licence valid in the UK?? :o

As has been previously mentioned if you have no insurance then the vehicle must be kept off road - this means on private property (need permission of owner of property). It cannot be kept on road, council land, pavement etc.

You can tax with temporary insurance.

The minimum road tax you can buy is for 6months.

As you say you are new to UK and seem unaware of the laws required for you to keep a vehicle I suggest that you readd through the various sections on motoring on this website:

Thank you! That all I wanted to know! Really useful site! It's a shame I haven't discovered it earlier :)!!!

If you do a hpi check for only £19.99 you can get 7 days free insurance from Aviva.
I presume you can't do that repeatedly? I.e. you can't do this every week and get a year's insurance for about £1039.48!

    No, I think it's a good wheeze.

Only catch is you would need to change car every week!

Yep, I will make car SORN, place it in back garden, and then after buying insurance policy I will tax it :) Actually it is off the road now, as it on a private land! Thanks everyone for your help ;)
