just as an afterthought: the evening standard conducted a (prob. unscientific) survey amongst young (25-34) office workers* in the city a few yrs back. the key question: if you were given a choice between a pay-raise to remain in yr present position or a promotion with no pay raise, which would you take?
something ITRO 80% would forego the raise and take the promo! so status was clearly the motor and not monetary gain.
*most likely staff employed in junior positions.0 -
Perhaps someone that wouldn't reveal their income could explain why as I sure as heck don't understand it.
I'm not comfortable with people at work knowing what I earn. As slim a chance as it is, I don't want to post on here in case my ID were ever outed.
If you were a friend or family and nothing to do with work then no problem.0 -
Oh no - are we all going to have post up details of our love life now?
Monogamous, not as often as I'd like but very good when it does happen.I wouldn't comment about my love life but no problem talking about money.
Perhaps someone that wouldn't reveal their income could explain why as I sure as heck don't understand it.I think....0 -
Bonuses and payrises were always done at a percentage rate anyway and it was the same across the board....so we just discussed the percentage rather than the actual cash amount!
But then, lets just say one year, after everyone getting between 3-5% for the last 5 years your boss says actually Sue, you are a star, we want to show you how important you are by giving you 20%.
You know the rest of your buds will still be getting 3-5%. Still want to share that info with them?0 -
Lots of high earners on here, haven't you got important jobs to do?0

declare low pay and invite contempt from certain quarters.
declare high pay and invite petty jealousy from certain quarters.
envy: never a pretty sight.0 -
You see, mate, the big problem with all this is that you assume people give a damn about who you are . . .
I know I don't
What makes you think anyone is interested in piecing together the various bits of the jigsaw of someone whom - to us - is a valued contributor to the forum but, in all other regards, just a few lines on an a pixellated screen?
It isn't so much peeps on this forum trying to piece it together, it is someone who stumbles across me. E.g. I post on the holiday board about going to X next weekend. Someone sees that and thinks they know someone who is going there, why not have a look at a few other posts. I actually did this my self last year. A friend won a holiday (jammy git). I'm just flicking through the comp forum (actually quite interesting to see what they manage to win!) and there they are. It is rare, but it does happen.
I agree this is real paranoia. While the risk may be miniscule, there isn't actually any upside to sharing the info either, so why expose myself to a risk no matter how small when there is nothing to gain.0 -
I wouldn't comment about my love life ....
ObviouslyPerhaps someone that wouldn't reveal their income could explain why as I sure as heck don't understand it.
I just don't see the point in it.
On an internet forum it's useless info.
Someone posted earlier they earned 57K. If that person is mortgage free, no kids, no debts...then he's probably well off.
If he's clobbered with a 500K mortgage, 6 kids and some alimony to pay, he's a poor chap.
And in real life, I avoid it as much as possible. And that's got nothing to do with hypocrisy or boasting. I just don't see any value in it. I only worry about what I am getting paid and if I think I'm being fairly rewarded for the job I do, that's enough for me.0 -
Isn't there some thing or another that is meant to mean you can no longer conceal salaries or pay scales within a company? Or was there just talk about it...to do with women/glass ceilings etc.0

The new legislation on equalities contains a section whereby an employer can no longer require an employee does not divulge details of their earnings to others - is this what you mean?Go round the green binbags. Turn right at the mouldy George Elliot, forward, forward, and turn left....at the dead badger0
