Sally, just a thought but is Bea creative with painting or colouring? That might get her used to the feel of a writing device in her hand, if that makes sense.

Easier said than done, and I know we all do it, but try not to compare her to others. They all have different abilities at this age and as you say she is probably way ahead some of them in reading. My daughter still has bad hand writing and she is 23! Nothing I could do would make her write neatly, but then again she was way ahead any of her friends with reading (and politeness, generoristy, humour, etc etc)
Again I know this is easy for me to say, but it is not all about academia - I always knew if I left my daughter in a room with my friends, she was able to hold a conversation with them and not grunt like some of her friends did - everyone is different and B's abilities will come to the front in different ways from her peers.OD [STRIKE] £2600 [/STRIKE] £0 :j Loan [STRIKE]£9500.00[/STRIKE] £0 :j Car [STRIKE]£3150[/STRIKE] £0 :j Moving Costs [STRIKE]£1300[/STRIKE] £0 :j Savings £1150 :j

How strange - I have just seen on FB that my nephew's wife is not happy with her daughter's teacher. She said that she has scruffy handwriting and she has only just turned 5 as well! She has gone to see the headteacher because she is not happy with the teacher as she didn't say anything positive to her and yet my great niece, like B is a very good reader!
Pretty much the same situation! Obviously the teachers were having a bad day yesterdayOD [STRIKE] £2600 [/STRIKE] £0 :j Loan [STRIKE]£9500.00[/STRIKE] £0 :j Car [STRIKE]£3150[/STRIKE] £0 :j Moving Costs [STRIKE]£1300[/STRIKE] £0 :j Savings £1150 :j

Sal, try not to worry. How many adults do you know with scruffy writing? Probably loads! Mine is dreadful unless I really concentrate. Untidy handwriting isn't a sign of lack of intelligence (think about doctors!) or creativity, it's just a sign of...untidy handwriting.
Feel free to tell me to keep my nose out and I do hope this doesn't sound patronising or critical, but I am not convinced restricting TV (unless she watches excessive amounts) will help. You said she is a perfectionist and scared of getting it wrong or not being as good as others (Ryan is like this too, and he also deals with it by refusing to try) - I'm not sure that imposing something she will possibly see as a punishment will help her to overcome her fear. It might just add more stress onto something that is already obviously a stressful issue for you both.
I would be tempted to perhaps leave it for a few days, until you have both calmed down a bit, and then think of a fun activity (maybe writing to Santa?) that you could do with her. Really praise her as she does it. Be effusive and enthusiatic. Even if it isn't brilliant, just pick out one letter she has formed well, and praise that. Then the next time she comes to write that letter, say things like, "See if you can write this one as nicely as that last one". Grit your teeth and refrain from even the tiniest criticism, because it's about trying, and finding it fun, not achieving perfection. If she sits and does it, regardless of how messy the result is, praise her for trying so hard.
Don't feel you have to rush and panic about it, and get her handwriting up to scratch by the end of the week or else. Tiny little improvements will soon start to add up, and as her writing improves, so will her confidence in her writing, so she will want to do it more, and will get better and better...like a benevolent square (this is the best I could come up with for the opposite of a vicious circle).
But mostly relax and remember that you are a brilliant mum, and she is a wonderful, bright, funny, sweet little girl, and kids do just develop at different speeds. Ryan STILL sometimes writes letters back to front, his letter formation is all over the place and his spacing is...unique...to say the least! But he is starting to write some very interesting, funny, insightful, well thought out pieces of work, that are taking everyone my surprise. Teachers that had written him off are now starting to praise his efforts and notice what a witty way with words he has. And he is 10 years old, so it is never too late for them to suddenly start making improvements.
Now if only I could stop him having outbursts of swearing..."I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250 -

Am trying to be awake for 10am meeting but feel like a zombie - think they will notice?
You'll do better than me sitting through 'An inconvenient truth' at 2.30 in the afternoon after a plate of chips. I actually wasn't asleep but my eyes were closed!
