    Afternoon all

Why is being a parent so flipping hard! I just want to do the best for b, help her at school and be someone and achieve things she is proud of in her life. I never was encouraged at school and I just wandered along and really lacked motivation, this has pretty much been me since leaving school. I went to parent consultation last night and whilst her teacher said she had settled amazingly well and her reading was outstanding her writing and some areas of numeracy really needed some work. I know she's always struggled writing but apparently she's point blank refused to do it at school on some days. The main reason is that she is a perfectionist and because she's not good at it, she won't try because its not as good as she wants. Today I was at school and 3 pupils from her class came in to show the year 2 teacher their work....it was amazing, handwriting so neat and the spelling and imaginative stories they had written were so descriptive...Now ive come home thinking she is sooo behind her peers.

okay rant over just needed to get that off my chest and have no-one else to talk to about it really

Aw Sal, as her teacher said her reading is outstanding - so she will be ahead of some with that. Did they give you any tips at school on how to help with the writing? The practise notebook sounds like a good idea, or what about trying to get her to keep a little diary and write down something she's done every day?

Id love to get her to practise in a notebook but she just refuses to do it in any kind of pressure. I thought getting her to help me with the shopping list ight be a good idea...nope she wouldn't do it. Going to really have to get my thinking hat on...first thing is putting more of a restriction on the TV!

Does she read? If you get her reading and then suggest she could write her own stories? Also when I was little my Mum got me to write letters to family... maybe she could write a weekly letter to her Dad?

Yes she reads fluently and has reading age of 7. I think its down to me to get a bit creative and imaginative with her...paints, pens, paper at the ready!

Sally - am I right in thinking that she is young for her year? If so, the children who had neat writing this morning may well be a lot older than her and therefore more 'developed' in that area. She will catch up in time. Please don't take this the wrong way, but I wouldn't pressurise her into writing at home - it needs to come from her. She will do it when she feels she's ready.

I put a few ideas on your FB page hun, just things to help strengthen her hands really. I had the same problem with DS.

Please dont think that most children her age have lovely writing, far from it.

Mine was like spiders had walked in ink and ran all over the paper! And I'd have smudges up and down my arm from it too...
