New Tv - aerial problem - no signal

Hi I have just conected my new tv (with built in freeview).

It is actually the first time i plugged in the tv in the house (moved in recently) and I all i get is no signal. I have tried the same on my old tv and all i get is a very bad channel one - nothing else. I know there is an aerial on the roof but dont know what to do next to get the picture. I assume the aerial could be pointing in a wrong way (but how do i know which way is the right way?)
I persume the aerial could be one that doesnt receive freeview but it cant even get normal channels?
Any idea anyone?
Thank you

Could be any number of issues, however it is very unlikely it is pointing in the wrong direction.

I am guessing that you have retuned the TV for the new address?

    Hi,
    Thank you
What do you mean by retuning the tv to the new address?

Well the new property may well have an aerial aligned to a different transmitter, even if you haven't moved too far.
When you select a channel it is still tuned to the old transmitter, retune both TVs.
On the freeview digital TV select the option that closest matches: "new installation/reinstall/replace channels"

This will be explained in the manuals if you have them or supply model numbers and some one can find the online manuals for you.

    Thank you,
I seem to remember that when we looked at the house the owner (older lady) was watching tv and her picture wasnt great, so just wondering if it is something with the aerial.
When i turn the tv on i do the first installation and it goes through all the channels but only finds a crapy channel 1.
I bought a new aerial cable and it fits nicely. So i will perhaps check the aerial.
    thank you
  • It is very likely to be the aerial, unless the house is in a dip. Do an internet search on the nearest mast to where you live and see if lining it up towards that helps.

    Thanks,

House is on the hill, looks like we have very strong coverage - only about 10-15miles from the transmitter. We have an aerial pointing in the right direction (on the roof) so what would you suggest i did. I tried to retune and only just ab could get channel 1 and 2. Any idea pls? Dont really wanna spend money for someone to come out and have a look and carge me a bomb for it?

    Thanks

Apologies if this sounds patronising, but are you sure you've got the tv set on digital not on analogue? I get dreadful analogue reception, but switching to digital on the remote gives a good picture, because in my case the digital reception comes from a different transmitter to the analogue.

Well you need to work through the system from the lead, socket, distribution to aerial finding any issues such as poor connections or unplugged amps.

I or another installer would go straight to the aerial and test the down-lead at the mast head but you should not be going on your roof.

If you don't have the knowledge or tools (meter) then you will need to get some one in, just get quotes incl hourly rates before they arrive, CAI or RDI membership should root out the really bad apples as both require training, experience and insurance.
