O2 iphone and tesco sim question

I have an old iphone 3g and was using it on an O2 pay monthly sim. While in the original contract I got the phone unlocked. In August the antenna stopped working (according to the apple tech guys), and as it was insured through my lloyds tsb bank account I sent it off for repair. While it was away I changed from O2 sim only to the Tesco sim only deal.
I got the phone back last week - the letter says it's been repaired.
I contacted O2 for my PAC code and the changeover was today. I'm getting nothing on either sim now using the iphone but if I put the tesco sim in an old phone it's working fine and has transferred my number over.
I've now realised the insurance company have replaced the iphone with another 3g. I'm assuming it's not been unlocked which is why the tesco sim is not working. As I no longer have a working O2 sim I don't know how to get the replacement iphone unlocked. Any ideas??

Have you connected the phone to itunes with the sim card in?
Also Tesco's web site will give you all the settings for the iphone if Itunes connection doesn't update it.0 -
If it hs been changed then phone would have been changed for one locked to o2 and in this case it would mean registering phone on iTunes with original o2 sim.o2 would have serial number on their system so you have to ring them to unlock it.
It will not work with tour o2 sim as that is dead since using PAC code.best bet would be get an o2 pay and go sim get it registered and then unlocked.0 -

A phone that is locked to O2 will still work on the virtual brands on O2.
So the issue at the moment is not about unlocking.
Can it be the same phone, and not quite repaired? Do you have a note of the old serial number to compare with this one?0 -

It's definitely a different phone - the imei has changed and the back of the phone is badly scratched where mine was immaculate. It looks like they've swapped it over rather than repair it. I'm going to call them about the state of the phone tomorrow but have a feeling they'll just tell me they've given me a working phone. It was working with the o2 sim until the number ported over today.
My wife has an unlocked 3GS and the tesco sim works in her phone.
When I put it in my phone it said invalid sim initially, now it has no network name or signal bars. I've got it in an old nokia just now and it's working fine in that.0
