Has anyone else had to give address details to return?

It doesn't worry me about providing this if I am returning a faulty product or something along those lines.
What does annoy me however is when a store overcharges you - ie their error - and they still insist on your name and address to issue a refund.0 -
If your returning a non-faulty item it's entirely at the shops descretion if they refund you anyway, so if they want to ask your name and address as a condition they can do. They'd be onto a stickier wicket if the item was being returned under SOGA. But anyway I don't see a problem with it, it's standard practice.0

If it concerns you, ask for details about how the data is stored, who has access to it and under what circumstances, what the archive/destruction policy is, whether this data is shared with other companies, and, most importantly of all, why this data is needed. All this is, of course, your right to know under the DPA. No doubt the person serving you would look at you blankly, say "dunno, we just have to do it", in which case you are faced with a choice. Give them the details, get your refund and leave. Or not.
Alternatively, just give a fake address. Contrary to what you were told this isn't to match it with your card details and addresses are asked for even when cash was paid for the item. I have nothing to hide. I just prefer to use a moniker. 'fluffnutter' plus associated avatar conjures up exciting images of vaguely pornographic shenanigans with a slightly demented person who might not be averse to the cat joining in. That was the idea, anyway."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
