Has anyone else had to give address details to return?

I went to return an item bought a few days ago to one of the Arcadia group stores (not sure if I am supposed to avoid store name on here). It was well within the 28 day refund period, and I had the receipt and method of payment with me, so no problems there.
However, when she went to process it, she told me that I had to give full address and name details so that I could be refunded, and that this had to match the registered card details.
I asked what this was for, as she wanted to enter them onto the till directly, and was told that it was a new system to aid and monitor future refunds (and I assume purchases, although she didn't say).
Has anyone else had this before?

Basically it is to stop fraud and other things.
If you have nothing to hine, there is nothing to worry about0 -
Whilst I don't have a problem with giving out my details from a "noithing to hide" POV, it seemed odd to me that they would bother with creating a new record for eahc and every customer.
I don't mean filling in / signing the receipt for getting a refund, which I am aware is only so that the till operators aren't accused of tills being down / fraud on the employees part!0 -
Its common that you have to give details when returning an item, ive done it before and nothing untoward has happened as of yet0

I had this today... in fact in Debenhams the bloke on the counter said I couldn't have a refund if I didn't give my name, address, post code and sign the slip! Further I'd got my daughter (16 years old) to pop and do it for my while I looked at some socks (on a time scale) and he said that he couldn't refund if it wasn't her card.
1. I don't understand why this is for my "protection", they don't give two hoots when you purchase an item, you could use anyone's card because they don't actually look at the card.
2. What stupid criminal would put money on a card they'd stolen??
3. Even if it is a criminal, they've got their goods back and I really can't think they'd go to all that trouble to be nice to customers.. else wouldn't they be equally as stringent about purchases?
4. I feel that if I don't want my name and address on yet another database if I don't want to then I don't have to.
5. If it's to protect staff then being stupid must be on the job description... like they couldn't invent a name and address and scrawl a name in a box??
Can they legally demand this information? Perhaps I'm just not obedient enough...0 -

Good lord. Names and addresses on refunds have been around for donkeys years. I can't believe anyone would query it, much less get in a strop.0

well people do get in a strop about, ive not had the pleasure of seeing someone get in strop about it, people waste time moaning about it when they could have filled in the details in 5 minutes0 -
Legally, no you don't have to fill in the slip printed out on receipt paper. Plus, having used a card, if the store needed to confirm identity for a return, they can do that with your registered card details.
Certainly not "having a strop", just wondering if anyone else had noticed the move from signing the receipt slip, and the assistant taking details onto their computer systems anywhere else.0 -
It certainly isn't about "having a strop". What sort of childish response is that? Troll? What's that all about?
It's about databases. It's about your rights as a customer. Is it not perfectly legitimate to politely refuse to obey superfluous demands from shops to reveal personal information? Are we not constantly being reminded about keeping personal information confidential? Point in fact, how many people use their name on forums? If you've got nothing to hide, what's the problem? (typed decisively and with some asperity)
BTW I like Freddie Snowbits line Freddie's opinion is subject to change without notice in direct proportion to the time spent in the Dog and Duck.0
