So I rang Capital One to ask why?
And they gave me the protection and identity theft asssistance, no pronlem. So thumbs up to them.
I thought that would be the case, and 5 cards is enough to manage any way! So like you I messaged them asking for it to be added to my account and got this reply:
"Thank you for your message asking for ID Fraud protection.
We offer this cover to all our customers. Please call the number below and one of our associates will be happy to set up the cover on your account.
If you need any other help, you can call us on our free phone number, 0800 952 5319. We're here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Thank you for using our internet services.

Seems you only get it with other cards if you ask!
Incidentally, I have always found Cap One pretty fair. Not many financial institutions I would say that about. When my computer manufacturer went bust, paid for with card, they straight away accepted liability for the rest of the 5 year warrenty, once I had provided a copy of the invoice. I had expected a protracted dispute!0 -
Don't forget you can also order your statutory £2 paper credit reports as well. There's a link on the Experian (.co.uk) home page.“Official Company Representative
I am an official company representative of Experian. MSE has given permission for me to post in response to queries about the company, so that I can help solve issues. You can see my name on the companies with permission to post list. I am not allowed to tout for business at all. If you believe I am please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com This does NOT imply any form of approval of my company or its products by MSE"

I applied for the Cap One card solely for the Fraud protection stuff.
I was turned down due my credit Scoring! Not happy, as I can't think of a single genuine reason to be turned down.
So I've contacted both Experian and Equifax for further details.
Hope its nothing too scary.
I only have 2 credit cards, a couple of store cards, no financial links with anyone (that I'm aware of :-o , I pay everything off in full each month. Maybe I'm not risky enough?0 -
I wasn't sure which section was best to post about Identity Theft in so thought I would just pop this on this topic.
Last year I was talked into taking out Identity Theft cover from CPP. Once I saw the policy on paper I ended up cancelling it. I really felt for £60 a year it really wasn't covering you for much.
I got a call from them again today say last year was really just a trial run and now they have improved it and it covers you for much more. It is still £60 a year.
Anyone taken this out with CPP or anyone else? Is Identity Theft cover really worth taking out?
Thanks.0 -
Anyone taken cover out?0

The cheapest way of protecting your ID is using a password. The cost 3 letters, 3 stamps and 3 envelops to all three Credit Refence Agencies and have them add a Notice of Correction on your file to the effect that you Password protect information on the file - use the Password of your choice.
A proactive means is to use your own biometric to protect yourself:
Taking Identity Fraud in Hand - Cost £6 then about £5 every 2-3 years thereafter.

You can however sign up to the Cifas Protective Register, this too is a password based system, cost £11.75 per year.

Hope this helps, the choice is yours.0 -
I joined Capital One no hassle Platinum Credit Card approx 2 years ago, because of the Credit Card Fraud Protection they offered
Lost my wallet at the weekend.
Rang them up thinking they would help.
Half the day wasted on the phone ringing around cancelling three cards manually, including the Capital One card.
Today I rang the 0800 952 5319 mentioned below by nitejar(14-02-2006 9:44 AM thread) and was told if I wanted if I wanted credit card fraud protection I would have to pay £20 to join Sentinel.
I only took the Card out because of this service they quoted when I joined, now they have redifined the service to the extent they are the same as any other card0 -
If, like me, you get a credit card statement each month through the post, stop for a moment and have a look at the statement and see if you can see your whole card number PRINTED OUT SOMEWHERE ON THE STATEMENT. Yep - chances are it is there. Is that how serious the card providers are about security ??
And while we are talking security, why not try signing in to your Ebay account using the wrong case for your user ID and password. (upper for lower or lower for upper or mixed) Interesting - Eh ??0
