Automobile Association

My AA membership has automatically been renewed and money collected from my Credit Card, without any form of notification or reminder.

As I purchased a new Vauxhall Corsa last month, which comes with Free 1 year AA cover, I phoned the AA and asked that this be refunded. However, I found them to be less than helpful, and am being charged £20.00 to cancel this cover!!

I wonder if other forum members have experienced this problem
with the AA, but if not I post this by way of warning ...

Automatic renewal unless you cancel, yu signed up to that last year. You woul be even more hacked off if you broke down the day after it expired.
  • With respect Hintza, I think you are missing the point. I am covered with the AA on my new car from 15th September, but the AA have now automatically renewed cover on the old car that I no longer have!!

I hate this "automatic" renewal system that seems to be operated by many Insurance Companies now as well as the AA.

Why can they not send a reminder?

You should have got a reminder about 6-8 weeks before the policy became renewable.

MIL has hers but she will be getting a new car in March so I am suggesting basic cover until then, so she can take advantage o the years cover she will get.

Because it's just easier with automatic renewal

I prefere it as then i don't have to worry about when i need to renew - It's done for me..

Maybe YOU should have rung the AA explaining that the car old would be going just like you must have done with your car insurance. Would of saved you a head ache.. lesson learnt maybe?

  • I just renewed my AA they wanted 130 quid but rang up and offered me a deal for £60. with my new AA cards they sent the renewal for next 2011 and the paperwork telling me it was auto renewal. I don't remember that being mentioned on the phone!
Nothing to see here, move along.

Its up to you to check when things are due for renewal, only got yourself to blame here, other people manage ok with it so you should be able to do it as well

The best thing with the AA is to cancel your dd straight away at the bank the day after taking out membership......that way you don't have to remember 11 months later.

Automatic renewal is just an extension of the nanny state, for people who are too thick to remember to renew their insurance or membership. Likewise its a great opportunity for companies to take money from you under the guise of 'helping you out'. Unfortunately OP, you will have agreed to this somewhere down the line and you should have got a letter explaining that it was running out a couple of months prior to renewal. Even if you didn't I doubt you could argue the toss. Just pay the £20 and take it as lesson learned.

I actually dont agree with you

If you lead a hectic life style then automatic renewal is a great benefit. Calling people thick is unjustified so maybe you should keep your personal opinions to yourself
