Am going to buy my son an X-box for christmas as it seems all of his friends have one ( he's still got a PS2)
Have had a look around and asked a few questions but am still slightly puzzled as to which one to get
Was thinking of a 360 elite 60gig , but was told it might not be wi-fi compatible and would need a dongle (£30 + ?)
Ideally , have seen a pre-owned 60 gig with FIFA 11 for £139-99 in Game with a 2 year "kid - proof" warranty
Thought this sounded OK and was a decent x-box to start off with
Any pro's or cons that anybody has had with it /
Thanks :money:

Where will the Xbox live?
If its near the router (the box that supplies your internet) you can probably get away with just using a cable to connect the two.
If it's going to be in another room then you will need one of these (Warning Fleabay link!)
That applies to the older fatter xbox 360's. The new slimline xbox has built in wifi so it's a moot point. But they are more expensive.
Either way i would recommend you get a console with at least 120gb of storage space. Reason being is he can put the games on the hard disk and save wear and tear on the DVD's. Much better for trade in's
If the difference between the 60gb you have been offered and a 120gb version is small that would be the way to go IMHO :A0 -
Well it all comes down to how much you want to spend.
The older Xbox 360's had a common fault known as the "red ring of death", so this has to be noted before buying any pre-owned, even fixed consoles could suffer it again (I've had this problem 3 times, and i'm on my 3rd console).
Also the older 360's need a wifi dongle to make them wifi compatible which is £40 (about that).
So if your going to buy pre-owned then best buy from a retailer and take the ridiculously cheap insurance they offer (think I paid £5 for the cheap insurance on my current xbox).
However, there are new 360's! There are 2 version.. the one with a 250GB HD and one without (comes with 4GB memory instead).
The new 360's have a wifi built in, so there's saving of £40, plus you'll get a new warranty and microsoft are usually good at dealing with any problems fast and effectively. They are also quieter and smaller!
the 250GB console costs £185 on amazon, and has an offer of getting a free HDMI cable and a selected game for £20 when you buy it.
The 4GB version has the same offer too and is priced at £144.00. However note the 250GB HD is £79.99 on it's own.
So to break down the price's here:
Pre-owned + Fifa 11 £139.99 + wifi = 179.99
New with 4GB + free HDMI cable + game at £20 = £164 (add 250GB hard drive = £243.99)
New 250GB + Free HDMI cable + game at £20 = 205.00
As for the game, it looks like fifa 11 is included in the offer.
Hope that helps!
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!0 -
thanks , spent about 20 minutes yesterday with a teenager explaining stuff to me

X-box would be in my sons bedroom (attic room) with the router in the living room so would need that thingy that you said.

Does he have his own computer upstairs? If so you can get an ethernet crossover cable to connect between the 360 and the PC. Once you have done this go onto the network connections within your control panel. Once here you will see two icons now, one for the Lan for your internet and one that states Microsoft Xbox 360. Highlight them both by holding down your control key on the keyboard (bottom left) click both of these icons so they are highlighted, then right click your mouse and choose bridge network connection. Job done, once the OS has finished bridging the Xbox will piggy back on the PC's network.0

The new 250GB Xbox 360. There is absolutely no point whatsoever buying any other. The old ones die (I had four in 3 years which all died from the red ring of death even though the last three had been upgraded "version 1" ones) and the old ones make an absolute racket from the fans whereas the new model is whisper quiet.0

If you can stretch to a new 'slimline' one then go for it, built in Wi-fi, better reliability, quieter etc. Failing that a preowned Elite would be good enough, with a pricey xbox wi-fi dongle (or a very long cheap ethernet cable like I use

People are reporting alot of problems with the new ones, also they are only quieter if you copy the game to the hard drive which you could do with the old one anyway.
If you want my advice get the normal xbox but make sure it has the Jasper chipset as they have a high reliability rate.0
