limescale removal help needed

Options
hi all
i have a toilet pan that has a limescale streak down the length of the back of the pan and also around the rim where the water enters the pan during flushing. i have tried 'off the shelf' products like 'viakal' but with little success. i feel it needs something thicker that will not just run off the limescale as soon as you apply it. almost like a jelly type composition (similar to some paint strippers), as the surface i need to treat is vertical.
can anyone recommend something for me to use please?
many thanks in advance.

I think the best thing would be an abrasive paste such as a surface cleaner and lots of elbow grease. It's works a treat for lime scale on my bathroom sink that has a leaky tap and causes lime scale runs.

I use a "power Clean" product by a company called Supreme. It's a paste that you apply with a damp cloth.
  • I think citric acid or vinegar can be used to get rid of limescale, but they would probably run off. Maybe you could thicken it up with some wallpaper paste or something.

I tend to use some stuff called "One Shot". Get it in a local hardware shop.

It's serious gear and make sure you're careful when using what is, in effect, concentrated acid. It works a treat and is also effective at clearing kitchen drains if they got blocked.

The other trick is to soak some toilet roll etc in the Viakal and then stick it to the area you want cleared - you could use some tape for this but often it will stay in place just by the fact that its wet. I tend to find the cheap supermarket own brand toilet limescale remover is the best option as its fairly thick but unlike toilet duck etc, its not trying to be anti bacterial and everything all in one - its just a good thick acidic gloop.

or you could install a water softener and not have any limescale in your house. Might cost a couple of hundred quid initially, but will save ££££s in the long run.

HG Blue (Now called HG Professional Limescale remover) - which is still liquid and will require 3 or 4 applications but will simply dissolve the limescale.

It's a stronger version of the Viakal and Lime Lite type products. It's not nice stuff to use, wear old clothes, gloves and make sure the room is ventilated well. Also great for cleaning shower heads etc.
