on the plus sides, i've seen AVG and McAfee enterprise V7 working on Vista RC1. Also, it seems VERY stable, and it is the Ultimate edition, which means it works on tablet PCs, media centre PCs and network domains (previously, MCE couldn't join a domain due to fast user switching).

On the down side, It's time limited software expiring June 1st 2007. So even if you bought the RC1 DVD for £6 you've only got an OS for 8 months.

On the overly scrouplous side, there's nothing to stop you sticking this on a PC as a "FREE" os for 6 months offer on computer you might be selling over xmas :P Certainly overcomes the expensive XP for the time being, even if it is time limited.

Yes AVG and McAfee are working on things to be compatible - I'd still go with the Trend Micro version which is in Beta at the moment to work with Vista.

And for people who KNOW about IT and how things work and more importantly how to recover their data and systems if need be... then I'd say yes Vista Beta is great :) - For anyone who doesn't know what regedit is and where to access sysconfig... Leave it well alone until it is released in it's final format. Some things may be compatible, but if you have problems you will get NO support from anyone because you're running a Beta OS.

And as for thinking it's "news" that it won't be out till early 2007... no I don't think it's news. Oddly enough I am not only able to read and thus can keep up with publicly released information but I also have my own information sources

wot do you mean by expensive for win xp...

He's saying that although windows vista is still in its testing stages, and is time limited, it is still free! Compared to windows xp which is quite expensive at £165.99 for the home edition and £275.97 for the pro edition.
  • I am very tempted to try this but I have heard that it is very 'buggy' has been known to crash a few peoples computers. Has any one had any experience??

  • RC2 is very stable for me. There are a few bugs but nothing major. It is a release candidate 2.

Yes about 10 clients every day whom we tell to uninstall it before we'll help them... Ranging from complete loss of everything because they hadn't taken a backup of their data... to BSOD because it's not compatible with their other software...

PLEASE guys if you know what you are doing then by all means have a play with the BETA version of Vista, it will be a great OS! BUT if you have only one pc, and you rely on it or you have never installed Beta software before -please don't do it...

I'm using RC1 (Build 5744) - but am reluctant to go up to RC2 after rumours that you couldn't go from RC2 to the final build without a complete format and re-install.

But the person i read it from might of been talking bum :p
  • The final is supposed to be released this Nov 8. ;)
  • can you still download RC2 ?

the link above goes to microsoft where they only mention RC1

Are there any other sites hosting a copy ?

It works fine for me. Use the Computer Active link I posted, then click on Free download - it couldn't be easier! G

Edit: OK, I found an alternative if you still have problems http://www.win-vista.net/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=291
