My smugness was not rammed down throats. I was merely trying to highlight that "tradespeople" are rarely the Gods they think they are and unskilled people can give them a run for their money by using basic mathematics (to calculate quantities, measurements, angles etc).

Whilst I cannot speak for Keystone, I think I know his posts well enough to say that he was not being serious, and was playfully poking you in the ribs. :D Honesty I do think this thread needs lightening before I top myself. :D (Err, joke intended.)

I just looked up keystone on checkatrader and he has a rating of 3748.82 out of 5. Seems legit.

This site reminds me off 118Trades and we all know what happened to them.

There is another forum about them here.

Anyone want to do a wiki on them, including the good and bad?

As someone who has been in the Building Industry for over 25yrs I think there is more chance of finding Eldorado than review site that Joe Public can trust.

The truth is the sites want to make as much money as possible because lets be honest no one is setting these up for the greater good its purely for financial gain and as such should be avoided at all cost. The answer is for people to do their own homework and research the people that are considering asking to quote.

    Tony,
For what it's worth I would sooner go for a "checkatrade" trader than someone out the yellow pages. I think the reason people use these sites is that we all KNOW the best way of finding a trader is a personal recommendation. Failing that it's something of a lottery.

I use a combination of Which? local, trustatrader, mybuilder, and the company's own website.

To answer your question about what you can do to prove your credentials to the public who find you on CAT or TAT or elsewhere I would say if you came to me for example to fit a new bathroom, when you provide your quote (which of course you do within 48 hours of visiting), also provide 2 x phone numbers and/or email addresses of 2 people you previously fitted a bathroom for, who of course are willing to provide a testimonial. One or two of these to me would be worth 100 positive ratings on those sites.

In addition to this, (good quality) pictures on your website of previous jobs you did give me a warm feeling..

    hope this helps

Like I said, what is obvious to one, may not be to another. :)
I would have thought that the use of the :D would have given a bit of a clue. I'll have to do better clearly. I've put myself on the naughty step for ten minutes. Tell me if that's not enough would you? Thanks.

    Cheers

I have just used checkatrade twice - one positive, one not so positive.

The positive got published straight away. The not so positive just resulted in me getting a letter asking me to repeat what I had already entered online.

Seems they needs to be a checkacheckatrade site :)

I agree the site will loose credability if they don't activly publish poor reviews.
