  • Hey Devonpie,

Just as rrf494g said, have you thought about getting your ink cartrdges refilled instead of buying new ones constantly. They work out cheaper and the ink quality is usually the same. Just some food for thought.

    Hope that helps.

  • I would advise caution regarding refilling cartridges, particularly if you are going to have to do it frequently. I used to refill ink-jet cartridges, but found it very messy and not that much cheaper. I also found that the ink did not last as long and was not as water resistant as the OEM ink.

Whatever type of printing system you go for, you do need to shop around on-line for the ink or toner. Ink prices in shops are far more than on the internet, and even between on-line suppliers there are vast differences in price for the same item. If you get two or more different printers, you may find that you need to get the ink or toner from separate suppliers, as frequently a supplier that is cheapest for one item, is not for another.
  • We bought a Kodak printer last year from PC World - initially we were really pleased with the quality of photos we printed off, but then it started malfunctioning and we couldn't get it to work properly. We took it back to PC World to get a replacement (we'd only had it a month!) and they told us 'Don't get another Kodak printer!' Apparently lots of them were being returned, and they had a bad reputation for completely malfunctioning within a few months. We've now got an Epson and are very happy with that. :o

I also work at a school - we only have one colour printer, which is in the Head's office so he can see who is printing in colour and tell them off. We really only use it on our letters and for the prospectus etc - things that really have to be in colour.

Everything else gets sent to a networked b&w photocopier in the office - all 14 classes can send items to it from their rooms and it also works as a straightforward copier/stapler. I believe this is a much cheaper option for a school, you usually get a contract which costs £x per month to include all your toner, any servicing and repairs etc.
  • I have the above laser printer. Toner cartridges from Ebay are 4 for £35 ish or less, for 2K pages. The only thing is that the printer generally says the toner has run out before it really has. You can get replacement chips from Ebay for about £4 or send your old chips to get them recharged.

    excellent quality of prints.

You can get a printer & 4 cartridges from IJT Direct for £135.

I also have a Canon printer I got from PC World for £30 - the IP6600D. I get ink cartridges from ink.co.uk for about £1ish (including chip) or 60p without chip - plus postage.
