problems with gas cooker

Hello
Last night I served guests a barely warm lasagne which they ate politely because theyre friends and theyre nice. But I was embarassed. It shouldve been piping hot. It had been in the oven with foil at gas 6 for an hour, then 10 minutes without foil to brown the top.
Now - tonight - I have a butternut squash roasting on the middle shelf and a shepherds pie heating on the top shelf, again at gas 6-ish. Theyve been in about an hour but when I went to take the foil off the pie the foil was practically cold - I could easily touch it with bare hands.
Help!
I can see the flame, so I know that it's on. What do I need to do next to identify the problem and whats my chance of mending it without buying a new one.
And if I really really have to how much is it likely to cost to buy a new gas cooker, get the old one disconnected and the new one plumbed in, and get the old one taken away?

when you turn the temprature up past no 6 does the gas flame stay the same or does it whoosh up the reason I ask is this happend to me and it was the thermostat mine went 12 yrs ago and it cost about £30.00 for a new one plus the fitting which was about £40.00 per hour or part thereof took about 3/4 hour
that cooker finally died last year and my new one was about £400.00 but there are cheaper one's than that I wanted one with a reasonable oven size

pamI didn't say it was your fault, I said I was going to blame you

This happened to one of my gas cookers and I ended up buying a new one.Even if I had it on setting 9 it would be like it was on setting 1(slow cook)
It might be best to get a corgi registered bloke(or woman) to have a look at it.But in my bitter experience I had to buy another one.
Cant remember if it was the thermostate inside? Sorry not much help.Debt Free Date:10/09/2007 :j :money:0 -
Thanks.
I've eaten my sort-of-warm dinner (so fingers crossed on the food poisoning).
It does woosh up when I turn it up, but the flame has quite a lot of red in it. Shoiuld it be completely blue? Sorry to be thick.
Anyone know where I can buy an over thermometer? Would rather know what the problem is before I take time off work and wait in for a plumber.
But DO need to sort this. Salad is not a long term answer!0 -
I had this problem less than a year ago. It was the thermostat and total bill to repair (parts, labour and call out charge) was around £100 but it was worth it because it was an expensive Parkinson Cowan cooker worth about £800. We live in Central London so may be cheaper in other places.0

Hi all
We have a forum dedicated to all the things that would fall out of your house if you tipped it upside down, and the regulars there are really good at helping with problems like this one, so I've moved your post across.

If you haven't solved the problem yet have a look at the back of your oven and see if you can see a thin pipe with a phile at the end of it. This should be fixed to the back of the oven but sometimes they fall off meaning they are closer to the flame and so read the wrong temperature. If it has fallen off try and find the bracket and fix it back. Good luck.0
