Problems sending/receiving MMS

I was able to send and receive MMS messages absolutely fine to my brother's mobile phone in Australia until a few weeks ago.
I am on Virgin in the UK and he is on Vodafone.
Suddenly, we can't use this facility anymore. We've both reset our MMS settings and we both received new SIM cards to try out but it still isn't working.
Both providers have now washed their hands of this problem.
Does anybody have any experience of this?

If a networks overloaded it'll drop service from outside its area to save capacity. But if it's been going on for while that's not going to be it...

When I worked on the tech support line of one of the networks it came up a few times (not with Oz, but with overseas networks in general). The issue is almost impossible to pin down and the message is going through so many transports to get from here to there. Which is why, I'd think, both networks have given up on it.

It may start working again on its own (not much help I know, sorry!).

You say you can't use the facility. But you don't say why.
Can you not send a message? Do you get an error? Or does the message send, but is not received at the other end?
From these answers I can suggest some fault finding you can do.
