Hi Everybody,
I've just been informed by both the RAC & AA that as my wife and I run a small business we are not covered by their breakdown cover 0 after years of paying in and not claiming! I'm trying to get the word out to everybody running a small business who uses these two companies that you are not covered.
Please pass this info on.
Thanks

Loads of people use their private cars for business miles and are covered.
That said, we have RAC Fleet cover for our 10 private cars as it's a lot cheaper. The man without a signature.0 -
Why were you paying both of them?0

Few years back the RAC came out to me when my works van broke down. Personal cover for any vehicle,
As long as its under 3.5t i think?
Just checked wording, Non commercial vehicles excluded. So no callout if your in a van. But cars are OK.
They even offer small business memberships, So i think your facts are flawed.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
This is another case why you should read your policy documents0

Thanks to all who replied to my post.
I have TREBLE checked with RAC. Anybody who is using a vehicle (car or van) for business and breaks down, and has only paid for domestic breakdown cover, is not covered by their policy and the patrol man will refuse to repair etc. The patrolman will look for signs of business (tools etc.) but also if the person breaks down and makes a call whilst the patrolman is attending - something along the lines 'I'll be a late for our business appointment as I'm broken down and the RAC if fixing my vehicle - then again the patrolman will curtail his activities. All the above is straight from the RAC renewal line. Their position was that I should purchase their expensive business breakdown cover (compare their price with Auto Assist mentioned on the main MSE pages.)
I know some business people have been attended by a patrolman whilst on business - this is just because that particular patrolman did not bother to check.
I emailed Honest John (the motoring correspondant of the Daily Telegraph - who was astounded, and pointed out that something like 45% of all new cars are purchased by small businesses -and quite frequently include RAC cover - but it is only domestic cover, not business cover.0 -

I think the RAC people you have spoken to have been anal in the extreme. I have just read the RAC domestic breakdown T&C's and there is nothing in there to limit breakdown cover for a private vehicle used for business purposes.
It seems the RAC want to have their cake and eat it. An Insurer will insure a private car for SDP and add business cover for no or little charge. What does the RAC expect you to do? Have personal cover AND business cover?
It seems that the RAC personnel are being told to enact an exclusion that isn't specifically listed. I have RAC cover and if this happens to me I'll be even more anal because I have time to waste and I'd invoke their complaints procedure and then a FOS complaint for the hell of it.The man without a signature.0 -
i always had rac personal cover..i d get totaly mad if i had a breakdown and was told that they wont pick me up or help as i drive my van, though if it hapened wont leave without a fight and in the end, will make sure not even a single product being bought till i die0

They are liable to settle your case if you make an FOS complaint or look like you will, but if you make an FSA complaint there is nothing they can do.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
