It's also worth noting that white van drivers tend to suffer from the same problems as sales reps in terms of long distances, not getting home in time to see their kids due to delays on the motorway etc. but they're generally less well paid and more likely to be tired having had to do actual physical work while on site, not just jabber on for 15 minutes about how great their brand of photocopier is.

If your driving under the speed limit then that's highly irresponsible!!

I have a video from my daily commute this morning, which i'll post later.
A van leading a queue of cars doing 35 in a 60 limit and then 25 in a 30 limit..... Im 4 cars back from this guy and there's a silver merc van up my tail pipe!! we approach a bit of a straight road and he hoofs it past me and finds he's headed for an oncoming car, he forces the car infront of me toward the kerb and barges his way in.

    Total and complete MORON!

However had slow coach at the front not been driving with such disregard for those behind, this would not have happened!

So, we saw a near head on collision with an innocent oncoming motorist, the car infront nearly ended up in a ditch and the car infront of him nearly got his car crushed by a sprinter van!!

Had a head on collision occured, it could easily have taken out 5 or 6 cars, most of whom were innocent motorists just trying to get to work!!

You might think it's clever to !!!! people off, but when your son/daughter gets wiped out in a head on crash with one of these impatient morons, will you be feeling quite so cocky?

Are you sure you have the right temperament for driving?

My 30mph is in a 30 limit. I have a clean licence which also includes motorbikes where i honed my initial roadcraft skills. If people want to be impatient and break the law, thats fine by me but i will not be harassed by other drivers.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

  • In general, too many drivers seem to have lead foots and red mist at times- I'm amazed at the character changes some people I know go through when they get behind a wheel- they drive like Schumacher.

It's always been like that, I recall a Disney cartoon (from the 40/50's I guess) with goofy (I think) as a car driver. Before getting into the car he is the perfect kind-hearted gentleman, the minute he gets behind the wheel he turns into a ill-tempered headcase.

Who are you to make a judgement call on other peoples circumstances? What if that was a doctor on an emergency callout for example?

If its a 30 and you're doing 30 then grand, but to purposely drive slowly in a higher limit when circumstances would allow you to drive closer to the limit is just ridiculous

I would have thought it was obvious that my reference to 30 mph would of course be in a 30mph limit. I really dont care who is behind me be it doctor,Ambulance,Firebrigade or the household Calvary. They must all comply with the law as i do.

Actually the law specifically allows the ambulance and fire brigade to exceed the speed limit in an emergency situation.

Not sure about doctors but I'd let them past anyway.

Also if you're going to do the "I'm doing exactly 30" stunt, have you had your speedometer calibrated accurately as they vary, especially as they get older. Many years ago me and a friend did a test where I matched his speed. The speedo in his Nissan Micra 33 and the speedo in my Ford Escort read 25.

It certainly explains a lot about Micra drivers, and Escort drivers for that matter.

A survey of 3000 drivers by GoCompare has revealed that more than half of them have suffered a 'bad experience' at the hands of BMW drivers, such as tailgating, speeding or abusive gestures.
The poor standard of the drivers of many of these cars is quite remarkable. Most modern cars are perfectly capable of exceeding all of our speed limits, but aren't driven, on the whole, in such an aggressive and dangerous way.
Good job the company doesn't manufacture white vans as well!

Interesting but I don think this is supported by any facts. If BMW drivers are so poor then it would stand to reason that insurance premiums for drivers of these vehicles would be much higher than driver of other makes. When I owned a BMW this didn't seem to be the case.

Would that be 5 or 6 cars mostly driving too close together to stop in the event of an accident? It'll be interesting to see the video!

As others have said though the gocompare website is meaningless. This article http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3526692.stm (from 2004 and based on observation of 15,000 cars) has this quote "The survey found as many as 70% of drivers were guilty of tailgating on some stretches of motorway"

They can't all be BMW or Audi drivers so it does indicate that that bad driving is endemic. More worrying for me is the fact that a large proportion of that 70% probably don't think they are driving too close.

Tailgating is endemic because if you actually leave the correct stopping distance, 3 cars will fill it and you end up tailgating anyway.

Winds me up so much that one, when I have to drive in the daytime.

Indeed they are though they are not exempt from the requirements of the highway code and could still be prosecuted for dangerous/wreckless driving.

    http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1984/27/section/87

There is no requirement for another user to give way or let them pass.

Many motorists foolishly jam their foot on the brakes on hearing sirens, thus causing a greater hazard. Far better to manage the overtake/give way having due regard to prevaling road conditions.

There is no requirement to have speedometers regularly checked for accuracy and they are assumed to be accurate enough. as it is the only instrument i have to indicate speed, that is the one i use. My vehicle has on board telemetry to provide info on gps position, speed, direction, and could indicate other conditions such as fuel economy etc etc.

I love tailgaters. If they bump me it means i get a claim for damages and their insurance rockets. I always have a camera on board for such occasions.
