  • Sorry OP you sound as though you are head over heels for this guy but as an outsider looking in he sounds pretty much like a complete jerk..............

He has worked at the same job for 20 years, earning 50k a year then made redundant, I am no expert in these matter but his redundancy payout must have been hugeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, why did he not clear his debts with this? Also you say his ex wife has half the debts so originally there was a total of 60k not just the 30 you mention, I dont care who you are 60k worth of debt on plastic is plain stupid by anyones standards.

If I were you I would give this guy the elbow seems to me like you are in for a terrible time with this obvious chancer.

    Best of luck.

  • Assuming he got some redundancy money, having been with his company for 20 years, why didnt he pay some of his debts off rather than going off travelling with it?!

Going bankrupt at his age (which we are all guessing though) he will end up in life of poverty in his old age.

I'm sorry, but going bankrupt has no effect on whether you can "rebuild your life" before you die.

Plenty of people are declared formally insolvent and then manage to earn a good living after the BO restrictions are lifted. Please refrain from giving advice if you don't have any formal training in insolvency. Misinformed advice is dangerous, however good the sentiment is.

Oh great the forum would die if everyone had to be formally trained to give advice.

I dispute "no effect" - for example if rebuilding you life involves going into certain professions. Is your comment the result of formal training? Obviously bankruptcy has an effect on rebuilding your life. It might be the lesser of a number of evils but it is not without effect. In the case of the OP's friend, culpability might be a factor too - which might prevent the bankruptcy being overlooked.

    This is a joke right?

In the same job for 20 years and gets a payout for Redundancy, instead of paying his bills - he uses it to go travelling?

He leaves you for 8 months to do this?

You want the debt written off while others (me included) slog our guts out to pay back what we owe?

He should be ashamed of himself.

Sounds like an episode of Shameless.
I am NOT a mortgage & insurance adviser - or anything to do with finance, that was put on by the new system I dont know why?!

I think the point has been well and truely made now.
I would hope that the OP has taken on board the commentary and is seeking professional help.
