I hope she can sort it out, but many universities are very oversubscribed this autumn and, so as to avoid fines from their funding bodies, may seek to exclude students on technicalities. So be warned.

Apparently, many universities are under pressure from the government to weed out fraudsters who apply for student loans, go to collect it but never attend lectures. It would appear that not attending the introductory lesson was a way of getting rid of certain students.

However, your sister has an acceptance letter, so assuming she has a right of appeal. She should go to see the Faculty Head or Award Leader to put her case, that she really wants to continue at the university. They are the people she will have to convince. As others have said, she should go to the Students Union for advice. Hope this helps

Hello everyone. I just got a call from my little sister who just started her studies in University of Greenwich BA Criminology and criminal psychology; she said that uni has cancelled her online logging in details, when she attended the lectures today her name was no longer on the list and her tutor told her she has been dropped by the uni. Her student loan came through, she has the confirmation letter, she got all A's on her A levels and it's the third week of studies now and everything went fine, she has her permanent student ID and student oyster photocard. So basically, she has all the prove she is a student at the uni. And now this? She said other student in her class are facing the same problem, they have just been dropped by the uni. Someone spread the rumour that there's a big waiting list for the course and they are trying to weed out the student who are not devoted. So people who skipped class are being dropped. My sister skipped one introductory lecture the first week, that lasted 30min. All the other lectures and seminars have been attended. And that's not even the point, does this have any merit? Can university even do this without any warning or announcement?

I am a recent graduate and there were lots of students at my uni that missed lectures and they did not get kicked off the course. The University will not kick her out for missing one lecture so I think that there is more to you sister story.

Did she make sure that she signed the register for the lectures and seminars that she attented ?
  • Hmmmmm... This is the second post I have seen about University of Greenwich kicking students off the course... The first post I saw was on 'The Student Room' forum, from a person who missed two lectures and consequently got kicked off... So I'm pretty convinced that the OP's sister is telling the truth... I'll post the link to it in a bit (quite a few people accused this person of being a troll, which I guess is understandable considering harsh course of action taken by the uni)...

I'm quite glad that I don't study there, I would have been kicked off many times... Such an awful way to treat students :(

I agree with the others about your sister going to the student union for advice... Also recommend writing to the university for an explanation and to complain... Who controls and relegates universities? If there is a higher authority, write to them too.x

The more general opinion on the Student Room is that a prank email has been sent; something that the email quoted seems to support.

    "Hi,
If you have missed two classes you will have been withdrawn from
the University. I warned everybody about this. This includes
all lectures and seminar. How many classes have you missed?"

This doesn't sound like a staff email to me, much more like a prank.

No I realise that and I agree with you on that point, the apparent email from the uni does seem quite dodgy (personally I don't see how anyone would find it fun in pranking students telling them they have been kicked off their course, especially if they were a fellow student, I mean I would be mortified)...

I just thought it was weird that I had seen two threads on the same day and that were so similar. Pure coincidence.x

I went to Greenwich, graduated 2009- a couple of people on my course attended about five lectures through the year and were still around at the end (though I couldn't answer for the grades they ended up with, lol)! On the other hand, Greenwich is hugely disorganised as far as admin goes and would rather burn the building down to destroy the evidence than admit a mistake, so keep all paperwork and comprehensive notes of any phone calls and don't let them pass you from pillar to post. Good luck!

Oh and in the meantime, tell her to keep going to lectures, writing her name at the bottom of the sign in sheet each time and signing it. Not a week went by on my course without several people having to do this so it's quite normal and will ensure she is logged as attending once her name is back on the system, as I'm sure it will be!

she saw the head of the department today and he looked through his list of people who are facing withdrawal and she wasn't on it. she's been told to sit tight and wait till this is figured out. must have been a clerical error. but the list does exist, so it means other students are facing this problem too and it's only been 3 weeks of studies

I think that this list will be of students who have missed large number of lectures during the first few weeks or have not confirmed their attendance by signing the register.
