University throwing out students for no reason

Hello everyone. I just got a call from my little sister who just started her studies in University of Greenwich BA Criminology and criminal psychology; she said that uni has cancelled her online logging in details, when she attended the lectures today her name was no longer on the list and her tutor told her she has been dropped by the uni. Her student loan came through, she has the confirmation letter, she got all A's on her A levels and it's the third week of studies now and everything went fine, she has her permanent student ID and student oyster photocard. So basically, she has all the prove she is a student at the uni. And now this? She said other student in her class are facing the same problem, they have just been dropped by the uni. Someone spread the rumour that there's a big waiting list for the course and they are trying to weed out the student who are not devoted. So people who skipped class are being dropped. My sister skipped one introductory lecture the first week, that lasted 30min. All the other lectures and seminars have been attended. And that's not even the point, does this have any merit? Can university even do this without any warning or announcement?

well they would have to notify her! What do her department say? Does she have a letter from them?
Sounds very fishy to me, are you 100% sure she doesn't want to drop out and is scared to say?Debt free 4th April 2007.

What was this introductory lecture about? Could it have been mandatory and failure to attend means the student gets withdrawn from the course and paperwork to this effect was signed at enrolment* (no idea if this would be legit though)?
What she needs to do is go to the student advice centre (or whatever it's called) at the students union (I think most have them) as speak to some one about this as they might have a good idea what the rules and regulations of the university are.
* You'd be surprised what they get you sign-up to."One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed. Everybody is in a hurry now and there is a 'the rules don't apply to me' sort of thing." - Bill Bryson0 -
Has she phoned the University? I can't believe they would drop someone without officially contacting them. At the Uni of York (where I went) it was pretty difficult to get kicked out of the Uni - I remember one of my friends got so many warnings for not doing work/ going to classes etc - he hated the course!
I would have thought as long as the tuition fees are paid, Universities don't really care as long as the student studies. At the end pf the day, the Uni is there to teach - they don't really care what your eventual grade is as that's down to your studies rather than their teaching.
I can't help but think it's a technical error being bigged up by other people? But then her tutor said it? She really needs to get in touch with the relevant people - first of all the criminology department then the registrar office. I'd be really surprised if this is true.0 -
Ally E, I am guessing there is more to this than your sister is telling you. If she contacts the Student Union they will be able to help her further.Gone ... or have I?0

Get her to go to the advice centre in her student's union. Any issue I had with my department mucking things up they would get in touch with those responsible and give them an all mighty telling off and helped me sort it all out.0

it happened just hours ago, the student union was already closed, she called me in tears. she definitely doesn't want to drop out. i'm posting here because i have never heard of anything like this before and it sure doesn't sound legal. i went to the same uni and skipped quite a lot in my third year and still graduated with good grades. this doesn't make any sense. two people from her course have been dropped and they haven't skipped any lectures at all.0

I am sure it will be open tomorrow.0 -
Tell her not to worry too much at the moment. She can go to the student office tomorrow and ask them what the problem is. It is likely to be something simple - computer glitch, your sister not signing something, mislaid paperwork...
I presume by her login details she means she cannot access her university email?0 -
