Well maybe, but then I must have lived in some odd houses.

I did say "normally", I'm sure there are many cases where what I said is not the case.;)

    Problem pipes

    What to do

There are three possible approaches that may overcome the problem:

Repair the valve in the lavatory cistern. Before you do this, make sure the water is turned off to the cistern. This should be done using the service valve mentioned above, if there is one. If there is no service valve, turn the water off at the mains stopcock and see if this does the job. To check that the water has been turned off, remove the lid and flush the cistern. If no more water comes in through the float valve and the cistern does not refill, the water is turned off. Now replace the float valve or replace the washer inside it. This should cure the pipe-hammer. A faulty tap washer will also cause pipe-hammer. If this is the case replace the tap washer.
Use pipe clips to fix loose sections of pipe. This will not stop the cause of the hammer but it will prevent the pipe moving and so reduce the hammer. Pipes should be clipped at no more than 1000mm intervals. However, I would be tempted to clip copper pipes at 300mm to 500mm intervals and plastic pipes as recommended by the manufacturer.
Another way to reduce pipe-hammer may be to reduce the pressure of the mains cold water into the house. Ask your local water authority what the pressure is and if it is more than 3 or 4 bars, fit a pressure reducer. If you don't feel you can tackle this job, ask a plumber to do it.
If there is no service valve fitted to turn the water off to the lavatory cisterns, now is the time to do it. If you do not feel confident to do this ask a plumber to do it.
