Barclaycard refusing CBT

Hi all, recently applied for & have received new Barclaycard, seen from an earlier MSE tip, 4.9% for life with NO FEE.

I was bit annoyed that when I applied on-line, although I was accepted, it didn't advise me of my credit limit. Even when the CCA forms turned up for signing, there was no indication of the credit limit.

It was only when I received my card that I realised the limit was only £1250.

Anyway, I thought I'd still move this amount over as I am just about to start paying a much higher rate elsewhere.

Have just phoned up Barclaycard to activate my card & do the CBT and the guy on the phone said I wasn't eligible for the transfer!

I have the card carrier paperwork in front of me where it clearly states " 4.9% interest for the life of the balance on any eligible balances transferred to your account within 60 days of opening your account, providing the amount does not exceed £5000"

I am really, really annoyed, I told the chap on the phone to cancel the card immediately, & he suggested I write in, with a copy of the agreement showing that I have been offered this.

Has anyone else had this?

"eligible balances" sounds like their get out clause to me. :(
  • But what do they call 'eligible'?

I could understand if I wanted to do a transfer from one of their group members, but I didn't even get as ar as stating which card I wanted to transfer from.

That doesn't sound right to me. Did you try again with another call? Some people work in the call centre are very useless as my experience. You get different answer from different people work in the same call centre sometimes! Make sure ask for his/her name and tell him/her you will make a complaint at the first place. So they might handle your call carefully.

Ring them again and be persistent. When I got my Barclaycard it was 0% for 10 months (even applied for on a site named around the offer, something like 0for10.co.uk). When I tried to do a BT, they offered me 6.9% for life. Took me approx 3 calls, plus various conversations with supervisors plus the involvement of their IT dept before they finally blamed it on a glitch of my offer code being incorrectly keyed into the system. Looks like you've had similar. Personally, I never did believe them and thought they were trying it on as most people would shrug and take the less desirable deal offered.
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...
  • Thanks for that-will phone them later today & will post back

I think that barclaycard sometimes restrict the amount you can transfer to 90% of your credit limit.

So this may be why the transfer was not eligible, maybe they would allow you to make a smaller transfer.

I know American Express have this rule (thanks MSE for the life of balance rate :D) for BT. However I once tried to transfer part of a balance onto my Barclaycard and they refused apparently due to my credit rating??? (not great but certainly not bad) This may be the reason although I'm not sure why when they give you that limit in the 1st place!

  • Cheers everyone,

I sent them a complaint via e-mail & received a reply stating that due to a 'technical issue' no balance transfer offers were available on my account at the time of my initial call.

However, upon checking your account I can confirm you have a balance transfer offer of 4.9% per annum until paid off. (No Fee)

I rang them to do the transfer, and, as above posts, could only transfer 90% of my limit.

I am trying to get a balance transferred from one M&S card to my husbands new M&S card (3.9% life balance, no fee), so I am using the barclaycard as a go-between, I am hoping to transfer bit by bit, the outstanding bal from my M&S to B'Card, and then Transfer from new M&S card back to B'Card!

    Hope this works!

Given your experience seems similar to mine, you can't help but wonder whether they're systematically playing this game...not making any accusations, of course...
