Ignore the MIL and use the money for what you want - you are the one who will have brought the toys and as you say you will be selling other items that belong to you aswell as them. I think it is rather cheeky of her to tell you what you should be spending the money on - you are the one standing there doing the stall in the cold not her!

If you want to spend the money on Christmas then do that. If it makes you feel better then put a small amount of it into the kids savings. To be honest she has no need to know what you spent the money on!

Hope you do well at the car boot :)

How interfering! Buy her Christmas present at the car boot sale, and put the money you would otherwise have spent on it into the kids' bank accounts if she's so concerned.

hahaha l think that's the most sensible idea yet, but it only works if you tell your MIL what you're going to do, how could she complain? :rotfl:

    Happy moneysaving all.

i'd tell your mil where to go !!!!!

next time don't tell her anything. ok she might not agree with your choice but she sould be supportive of your choice.

i think it is a very sensible idea to fund the purchase of new toys for xmas with the selling of older toy's. makes perfect sence to me.

    Ahhhh MIL's!!!!
Ignore everything she said - it really is none of her business!
I carboot many times every summer, mainly selling the toys the children have outgrown. Then i use the money to buy 2nd hand toys and clothes the children will enjoy next christmas. Its a cycle I go through every year.
Family members know that I sell toys as they are grown out of and i've had a brilliant response too. They see it as their money being used over and over again giving the children numerous toys over the years.

I do a few carboots sales every year. Anything of my daughters that sells I give the money to her. Anything else and I spend the money how I like - I wouldn't have MIL tell me what I can and can't spend it on.

It's slightly different for me though as my daughter is 12, and so enjoys sorting her items out etc and comes with me to sell them and she just keeps the money.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
  • How rude! I doubt that the kids paid for the toys in the first place did they? What's she moaning for? I sell at car boots and the money goes on what ever is needed at the time, even if it goes towards the weekly shop!

I've just made some money on ebay selling some toys my 18mth old has pretty much grown out of, she still has plenty but with xmas on its way we'll have more to house soon so she won't miss what's gone. I had intended to put the money towards the MOT, but it just so happens both my girls feet have grown so i'll use it to get them both new shoes. I don't see the problem with this, or even if it went towards the car.

Personally i'd tell her where to get off!

I really can't stand it when people think they can get involved in telling you the "correct" way to spend your money! I wouldn't do it to anyone else, as it's not my business how anyone else handles their money, as is it none of theirs what I do with mine.
(Of course this is different with a joint account etc, or if they ask for your advice).

Good luck with the car boot and use the money for whatever you see fit. You've earned it, by organising the car boot!

My son (13) has only just started showing an interest in ebaying stuff he's grown out of/finished with and he currently keeps the proceeds but when he was smaller I kept it, children cost money to raise in lots of ways other than new toys and you will repay them many, many times over.

I recently sold a couple of T-shirts of his, one he bought at a gig and another band T-shirt that was a Christmas present last year and he kept the money for these. I'm currently selling a couple of T-shirts that I bought just because I'm his mum and no way will he see the cash from those!

I wonder if your MIL bought some of these items as gifts for the children and feels a bit hurt that you're selling them and spending the money?

It doesn't give her the right to tell you what to do with the money, but it might be a reason that she's sticking her oar in. Just a thought.
