Car boot sale - what to do with money.

Hi everyone,
I was telling my MIL that I was going to do a car boot sale towards the end of this month. I was clearing out alot of stuff ie old clothes, make up I have never used not opened, and kids toys. There is loads of kids toys, things they dont play with anymore.
I said to my MIL that if I did a car boot sale and sold these things, I could put the money towards this years Christmas, but, my MIL said I had an absolute cheek to sell my kids toys, and use that towards Christmas to get them more toys, and I should actually be putting the money into the kids' bank accounts, after all most of the stuff belongs to the kids anyway.
I never really thought about it this way, and now im actually questioning myself about what I should do with the money I make. I wont deny that the money would come in very handy for this Christmas. Usually I would just send all the stuff to Charity shops.
What do you think? Should I just give the money back to the kids to put into their bank accounts?

I think its a sensible idea to use the money for Christmas.
I think I would have told my MIL to mind her own business but thats just me.
Most of the toys were probably paid for by you anyway!
If you feel the need to put some money away for the kids then just bank a percentage and put the remiander towards Christmas.(c) Broke in Yorkshire. ( there are worse places )
Those that matter don't mind and those that mind don't matter!0 -
Thanks for your reply. I do put money by for my kids whenever I can. Ive never done a car boot sale, so I dont imagine I will make a fortune, but, maybe I will put something by for them and that way it will keep her quiet.

Yes, I agree with the poster above. The toys are just cluttering up your house if they are not being used anymore, so you may as well sell them and use the money to buy more toys for Christmas. I don't think it's anyone else's business what you do with the money, especially if you save for your kids anyway. Don't worry about it.0

I would be telling MIL to mind her own business. In fact I can't believe how rude she has been! That money should be used as you see fit. x0

Im afraid i would be telling the MIL to mind her own.
It is a sensile idea to use the money for christmas, every penny helps and if it means you wont be as stretched at an expensive time of year i don't see the issue in using the money.
In a way your recycling!:D:j Mummy to little Poppy June :j0 -
And the moral is: don't tell your MIL anything.
I think it's very sensible to use the money towards Christmas - stuff what MIL thinks! We've done a couple of car boots, and encouraged the kids to choose things they never play with, with the promise of 1 new toy they really want instead. It worked.0 -
Cheeky woman! I'm doing a car boot soon and getting rid of my little ones baby stuff and some toys he wishes to give me (with the promise he'll get another new one for his troubles) l'm going to put some in my little boys account but the rest is ours to do with what we want (going to OP on mortgage) we paid for most of it anyway.
You do what you feel is right. x
Happy moneysaving all.0 -
What a cheeky MIL!
I mostly sell the childrens clothes and baby equipment on ebay or Netmums, car boots are to early for me. The money mostly goes towards getting them new, bigger clothes, toys & equipment.
It makes sense to use the money for Christmas, no doubt it will all go on the children anyway.:beer:0 -

And I think your MIL has an ABSOLUTE CHEEK to try and interfere!!
Who paid for them in the first place? I'm guessing you bought the majority. It will all go back to them in the end, what does it matter what route it takes?
Please don't question yourself, you are being sensible, I am annoyed that someone has made you doubt yourself like this.
I woudl refrain from mentioning it again, and don't even tell her how much you made or what you have used it for. I wouldn't even say you are putting some away for the kids, she will just see that as her being 'in the right' and you have done what she told you.Cross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219.
