wireless - help!

I have just moved house, i would like to use the internet to download music and films etc. The accommodation i am in is not covered by ntl or telewest and i dont have sky. I have a bt plug in my room but will need it to be reconnected via a new line (long story) costing £125, plus i dont actually want to pay for line rental because i won't really use it. I do have wireless on my laptop. Is there a way i can use wireless, without needing a landline to start and that wont cost me the earth? I' stuck!

There are not really any options to you, other than a BT Line install and then getting this ADSL line enabled. There are some companies that provide wireless Internet solutions in certain areas, but these are normally very costly.

I think you just need to get the BT Line active, on the cheapest tariff as you dont use it.

You say there's a BT socket "in my room" so presumably you're a lodger or living in a shared house.

There is almost certainly a BT line (other than the one in your room) into the property somewhere which is either active or, if disconnected, can be reconnected free of charge. Try to come to an arrangement with your landlord or housemates to use this for ADSL and share the line rental.
