If you could just use your iPhone as the 3G modem there would be less sales of the 3G iPad so lost revenue...

Incidentally do I smell troll? :)

BTW the iPad works just fine with an ad hoc WiFi network which you can set up pretty easily on a Windows PC to share a 3G dongle but non-rooted Android phones won't. Rather than risk naffing up my Desire I bought an unlocked 3 MiFi to use my Vodafone 3G with as well as this netbook as Three (which my Desire is on) is pretty useless here.

You most certainly can do this (as long as you have a good data package on your mobile). I bought a nice little proram for my Nokia 5800 called JoikuSpot for £8 (I think). I understand there is also a free version. The difference is, for me, a major one. On the paid version you get the ability to have a secrity network key just like your home router, as opposed to it being open

All you do then is turn on your wifi on the ipod/phone/pad and select this as the network. Worked a treat

The Android version allows for a network key. That's an absolute necessity in my opinion.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying about non-rooted Android phones. My un-rooted Desire works perfectly as a WiFi hotspot. The capability is built into FroYo.

  • KwickBreak - Absolutely not a troll.

Just find it ridiculous that Android phones have this capability and iPhones do not. Why pay a premium price for a product that does not have the usability you would expect?

Its frustrating for me as I got my iPhone before the Desire was available or any other decent alternatives really.

Apple produce lovely products and I have no problem with them really as a company but its the small things they do to squeeze every last penny out of their consumers that really gets to me.

Of course this will never change until the sales figures go down or the competition improves. As a consumer I just hope that the increased in use of Android phones in the states is replicated here and that Apple start to lose their (self made) monopoly on the market. They are clearly brilliant at producing the goods but I couldnt have put it any better than the poster above who says that they dangle the carrot a little too far away from us.

You misread what I posted. I'm not talking about Android's ability to create a hotspot which is fine - I'm talking about its ability to work on a simple adhoc hotspot set up on a windows PC - ie the phone uses WiFi to leach internet access via the PC.

In my own case I have a contract Vodafone 3G dongle which works just fine at this location but Three reception which my phone uses is unreliable. I can create a hotspot on the PC but only an adhoc one not an infrastructure type. My wife's iPad works OK on that adhoc network but my Android phone can't without rooting it and making some changes. Rather than do that I bought an unlocked Three MiFi which can be used by all three (netbook, phone, and iPad) using the Vodafone sim.
  • Hi. I have been trying to connect my ipad to my htc desire hd using the built in wifi hotspot that comes with android 2.2 on the phone. Can anyone who has got this working, let me know how please?
I can set up the hotspot and get my ipad to connect to it, but I can't load any internet pages etc.
    Many thanks.
